Dear Wine Aficionado,

Its Spring - although we are yet to notice it in Melbourne - and we mark the occasion with our wine of the week, a Rose from the Southern Rhone; 2006 Domaine Vieux Chene Capucines Rose. Rose is the perfect Spring and Summer wine and this one at $18.95 is great value. For lovers of a more upmarket Rose there are still a few Domaine Tempier ten packs left.

In 2005 the Domaine Hubert Lignier became Domaine Lucie et Auguste Lignier following the death of Hubert's son Romain. The 2006 vintage is our second offer from the renamed Domaine. This Domaine has its vineyards spread through the Cotes de Nuits in Morey-St-Denis, Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny and Fixin in the north of the Cotes du Nuits. This is the first vintage under the control of Kellen Lignier, the widow of Romain. Burghound and Wine Spectator have reviewed the wines favourably. These wines are available for immediate delivery.

We have received an allocation of the 2009 Jeffrey Grosset white wines from the Clare and we are pleased to offer the Polish Hill Riesling, the Springvale Riesling, and the Semillon-Sauvignon Blanc. Please note that the quantities are extremely limited so act quickly to secure these terrific Grossets.

If you like the wines of Cahors dont miss the Cellar Release Clos Triguedina Dinner at Libertine in North Melbourne. There were just 6 bottles each of the Cellar Release wines brought into the country!  This will be the only chance for you to have a look at the amazing wines from Clos Triguedina dating back to 1967 from a Magnum! Not to mention a superb menu especially prepared for the dinner by Libertine's Nick Creswick. Thursday 10th September. Still a few places left. More details below.

The selection of sweet wines for the Sweet Sensations provides a snapshot of the best regions in Europe for botrytised, late picked and other sweet wines. If sweet wines of great elegance and finesse are your thing this is a tasting not to be missed. Tuesday 22nd September. Still a few places left. More details below

2006 Vieux Chene Capucines Rose
Shelf Price $22.00 Offer Price $18.95
100% Grenache. The fruit for the wines are sourced from Domaine Vieux Chenes properties in Cameret in the Cotes du Rhone Appelation. The vines are surrounded by live oak and the typical Mediterranean brush, swept by the Mistral wind in a very typical Provencal landscape. The soil is red-brown, of clay-limestone texture, very rocky, deep and with very little organic matter. Domaine du Vieux Chene is a certfied organic producer - ECOCERT.

"Notes of juicy raspberries and red fruit with hints of savouryness on the nose which follows on the palate, style of rose more suitable to food,"EC

2009 Grosset Offer

Jeffrey Grosset has been known to produce some of the very best Rieslings from Australia and in August 2009, Langton's has rated the Polish Hill Riesling as the 'Top Australian Riesling'. Established in 1981 by Jeffrey Grosset in the historic township of Auburn in the southern tip of the Clare Valley 100 kilometres north of Adelaide. We are proud to offer the fantastic 2009 vintage to you. Please note that quantities are limited.

2009 Grosset Polish Hill Riesling
Shelf Price $49.00 Offer Price $42.00
Rated as the Top Australian Riesling by Langton's in August of 2009.

"The 2009 Polish Hill is a surprise packet with quite exuberant, lifted floral aromatics providing a departure from the norm.On the palate, there is a brightness and youthful tang that is rare in young Polish Hill Rieslings. As ever, there is intense, pristine lime juice flavour made more complex by slatey, minerally characters all compressed and coiled by the wine's tightness of structure. There's characteristic finesse, power and a steely quality before the taut natural acidity highlights its lingering, dry finish. While the 2009 Polish Hill should age as well as other vintages, it may provide more joy in its youth", Producer's notes.

2009 Grosset Springvale Riesling

Shelf Price $38.00 Offer Price $32.00
Some pear and banana, but also deep, searing lime: a touch of blue cheese (all good). Seriously deep. Plenty on the palate: the essence of Clare riesling. Will build in bottle and very young.
94(96)/100 (10/10 enjoyment in seven or so years)." Tim White Australian Financial Review 22-23 August 2009

2009 Grosset Semillon Sauvignon Blanc
Shelf Price $34.00
Offer Price $29.00
Blend of 55:45 Clare Valley Semillon and Adelaide Hills Sauvignon Blanc.

"The 2009 Grosset Semillon Sauvignon Blanc is a trifle young at present, still a bit reserved, but with such fabulous intensity of flavour that it's hard to resist even now. There's a mini-explosion of passionfruit, guava and jackfruit flavours, pristine, refreshing and tangy, a vibrant, zesty mid-palate tautness before the tight structure leads to a finish that shows slatey, minerally overtones and bright, natural acidity. At present, it is the intensity that is the hallmark of the wine. There's complexity, succulence and finesse that will assert themselves, even in the short term." Producer's notes

Domaine Lucie & Auguste Lignier 2006 Offer

The “Domaine Lucie et Auguste Lignier” was founded in 2005 with a rich heritage for making wine. The Domaine was established after Romain Lignier, the son of Hubert Lignier, passed away in 2004. Romain was the passionate winemaker of the “Domaine Hubert Lignier” who led it into an era of success. Romain Lignier left behind his American wife, Kellen, and their two small children Lucie and Auguste. It was his dream to create wines with character and style, which should be influenced by the great respect of Burgundy “terroir”. After years of working side by side with her husband in the vineyards and in the cellar, Kellen decided to take up the mantle of the “Domaine” and devote her life to her husband’s work, the passion of winemaking. The winery was therefore named after their two children Lucie and Auguste (hoping that one day they will follow their parents footsteps). This transition has not been without controversy with Hubert Lignier, the father of Romain and father-in-law of Kellen, establishing Hubert Lignier Pere et Fils. It seems that in there future there will be two Lignier Domaines producing very good Burgundy. Our offer of 2006 Domaine Lucie et Auguste Lignier follows:

"
Just as elegant and a bit more complex with fresh and airy red berry fruit and subtle earth aromas that introduce dusty, complex and penetrating middle weight flavors that possess better finishing precision and punch though there is a mild edge to the finish that is again, ever so slightly distracting but not really enough to upset the overall sense of balance." 87 Points Drink: 2012+ Burghound.com

2006 L & A Lignier Morey St. Denis "Les Chaffots" 1er Cru

2006 L & A Lignier Morey St. Denis "Cuvee Romain Lignier" 1er Cru
Shelf Price $265.00 Offer Price $225.00
2006 L & A Lignier Morey St. Denis "Cuvee Romain Lignier" 1er Cru MAGNUMS
Shelf Price $510.00 Offer Price $435.00
"A blend of two lieux-dits with 50 to 100 year old vines, Les Faconnières and Les Chenevery
A big, powerful red, packed with black cherry, plum and mineral aromas and flavors. This shows a lot of oak, but the main impression is ripe fruit. There’s nice length and grip, with a long, sweet finish. Best from 2011 through 2022." 93 Points  Bruce Sanderson Wine Spectator

2006 L & A Lignier Chambolle Musigny ‘Les Bussieres’
Shelf Price $117.00 Offer Price $99.95
"A combination of macerated cherry, vanilla, mineral and chocolate grace this rich red. The tannins are dense, but fine, with a light grip now on the finish. Best from 2010 through 2018." 90 Points Bruce Sanderson Wine Spectator

2006 L & A Lignier Chambole Musigny ‘Les Baudes’ 1er Cru
Shelf Price $255.00 Offer Price $215.00
"
From a small .17 ha parcel of 40+ year old vines close to Bonnes Mares
An extracted nose of ripe black berry fruit and cassis notes merges into rich, supple and mouth coating flavors supported by both firm but ripe tannins and plenty of minerality on the textured, delicious and sappy if slightly dry finish." 89 Points Drink: 2012+ Burghound.com

2006 L & A Lignier Gevrey Chambertin ‘Aux Combottes’ 1er Cru
Shelf Price $310.00 Offer Price $265.00
"
from a .14 ha parcel of 40+ year old vines
Classic ruby. Reduction knocks the nose down but the red berry fruit flavors are more firmly constructed than those of the prior wine as well as being cool, round and detailed though they tighten up very quickly on the precise if somewhat chewy finish that is also a bit dry. I have accorded this wine a slightly wider ratings spread than normal as this is very awkward today and tough to read." 87-91 Points Drink: 2013+- Burghound.com

2006 L & A Lignier Clos De La Roche Grand Cru
Shelf Price $320.00 Offer Price $275.00
2006 L & A Lignier Clos De La Roche Grand Cru MAGNUM
Shelf Price $777.00 Offer Price $660.00
"From a .79 ha parcel of 35 to 45 year old vines located in Monts Luisants
Compelling aromas and flavors of blackberry, black currant, iron and spice combine with a dense structure in this ripe, powerful red. There’s still some oak to be absorbed, but this ends with an aftertaste of sweet fruit and spice. Best from 2012 through 2025. From France." 95 Points Bruce Sanderson Wine Spectator

2006 L & A Lignier Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
Shelf Price $377.00 Offer Price $320.00
2006 L & A Lignier Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru MAGNUM
Shelf Price $777.00 Offer Price $660.00
"
from a tiny .09 ha parcel of vines in Charmes proper
A macerated yet high-toned and not inelegant nose that is fresh and expressive with mostly red berry fruit aromas preceding textured, delicious and admirably complex middle weight flavors where the supporting tannins are well integrated and dusty, all wrapped in a mouth coating, precise and solidly persistent finish where again, the barest trace of dryness can be detected. Benefit of the doubt offered here as the dryness is extremely subtle." 90 Points Drink: 2014 - Burghound.com

Domaine Tempier Bandol Pre Arrival Offer

We still have a few ten packs available. This estate is one of the leading producers of Bandol and with its small production and emphasis on quality has achieved a cult status amongst its followers.

The Domaine Tempier reputation for quality is reinforced by the wine reviewers
"this is one of the great wine estates of the world." Clive Coates MW
"There seems no doubt amongst connoisseurs that the best red wines come from Domaine Tempier." Robert Parker
“Provence also has a number of more specific appellations, of which the most important is Bandol,....Domaine Tempier is the best-known producer...” Jancis Robinson
“Domaine Tempier is Bandol's best and most storied producer; its wines have made a noticeable upswing in quality under the leadership of winemaker Daniel Ravier.” Kim Marcus, Wine Spectator.
“This is, in my frequently reaffirmed opinion, one of the world's most admirable rosés.” Chris Kissack The Wine Doctor

The vineyards of Bandol were destroyed by phylloxera towards the end of the nineteenth century. When the vineyards were replanted influential growers, including the Tempier family, the owners of Domaine Tempier, decided that quality should to be paramount and with this in mind selected Mouverdre as the principal grape to build the new Bandol wines upon, using Grenache, Cinsault and Syrah in support roles. Lucien Peyraud married Lucie Tempier in 1936 and they settled on the estate in 1940. Bandol was one of the first vineyards in France to be granted the AOC status by the Institut National des Appellations d’Origine (INAO) in 1941, soon after it was created. Lucien Peyraud was one of the influential figures in the establishment of the Bandol AOC and the place of Mouvedre in the appellation.

Domaine Tempier, has a substantial percentage of its acreage under old vines. The two best vineyards are La Tourtine and La Migoua. The single vineyard 'Cuvée Migoua' is 50% Mourvèdre, 30% Grenache, 15% Cinsault & 5% Syrah. The 'Cuvée Tourtine' is 75% Mourvèdre, 25% Grenache & Cinsault. The vineyards are managed organically without chemical fertilizers or other chemicals, and with minimal use of sulphur.

Domaine Tempier Bandol Rosé 2008
“Bright orange-pink. Strikingly complex aromas of peach skin, nectarine, redcurrant, dried flowers, garrigue and smoky minerals. Juicy red berry and pit fruit flavours are firmed by zesty minerals and deepened by a note of cherry skin. Dry, focused and chewy, with strong finishing punch and lingering notes of talc-y minerals. More graceful than the 2007 version, but lacking that wine's power, which isn't a bad thing.” 92 points Josh Reynolds Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar - June '09

“Very elegant, with unctuous flavours of dried berry, cherry and melon. This has a pretty salmon colour, with a long, lush, richly spiced finish.” 90 points Kim Marcus, Wine Spectator - September 2009

Domaine Tempier Bandol Cuvée Classique 2006
“Aromas and flavours of mocha, kirsch and dark plum are pure and powerful. A finely crafted red, with a mineral-rich finish loaded with dark chocolate notes. Drink now through 2013.” 90 points Kim Marcus, Wine Spectator - 31 May 2009

Domaine Tempier Bandol Cuvée Migoua 2006
A pure and powerful red, finely polished and structured, with a broad swath of red plum, raspberry and cherry flavours. There's concentrated cedar and cigar box on the finish. Tempting now. 93 points Kim Marcus, Wine Spectator - 31 May 2009

Domaine Tempier Bandol Cuvée La Tourtine 2006
“Very beefy and rich, with good cut to the red plum, dried berry and kirschlike flavours. The intense and concentrated finish is dominated by vibrant mineral and spice notes. A good candidate for the cellar.” 93 points Kim Marcus, Wine Spectator - May 31 2009
