Wine of the Week

2006 Chateau de Tracy Mme de 'T' Pouilly Fume

Chateau de Tracy dates back to the late 14th Century, and came into the hands of the current owners, the d'Estutt d'Assay family, in 1586. Pouilly Fume is one of the key regions for Sauvignon Blanc in the Loire. Across on the eastern side of the river, Pouilly Fumé has a flatter terroir than Sancerre, with alluvial deposits in the soil with increased presence of silex, or flint, in the soil. The Mme de 'T' is a fresh approachable wine and was the stand out of last weeks French whites tasting

Portugal - Selection of 6 - Douro

For the first time available in Australia, we are proud to offer the wines from the talented Jorge Moreira, proprietor of Quinta do Poeira and Chief Oenologist at Quinta de la Rosa. This weeks offer will be a selection of 6 wines from both estates and it will include the exclusive Poeira Douro Tinto.

Jorge Moreira is regarded as one of the rising stars is the Portuguese wine scene where he has won acclaim for the wines at both Quinta de la Rosa and Quinta do Poiera. Quinta do Poeira is his own venture and has 9 hectares of vineyard situated in Provesende, stretching along a hillside in the Vale do Pinhão on the right bank of the river of the same name. The wines produced at Quinta do Poeira are made with minimalist intervention, using traditional stone vats, temperature controlled casks for fermentation and an old vertical press.

Quinta de la Rosa is located at Pinhão in the heart of the upper Douro. It is run by Tim Bergqvist and his daughter Sophia. The quality is high as attested by the many gold, silver and bronze medals awarded at the International Wine Challenge. In 1995 they were awarded the Fortified Wine Maker of the Year Trophy. This Estate also produces table wines of exceptional quality. Already winning respect internationally, this is an estate to watch. The grapes for the Dourosa wines are brought in by Quinta de la Rosa from local growers in the upper Douro region of Portugal and vinified by their oenologist Jorge Moreira. Dourosa is this Quinta's budget range.

2007 Quinta de la Rosa Branco Dourosa
"The 2007 BRANCO douROSA is a typical Douro blend of varieties like Viosinho, Gouveio and Rabigato, 30% aged in French oak. For an entry level white, this shows good depth and some persistence, although the acidity is perhaps overtaking the fruit. A slight caramel overlay was a little obvious on opening, but the wine surprised me pleasantly by coming around well with warmth and air. This is quite pleasant at the moment, but I suspect it needs drinking in the near future to continue to show well. Drink now." 85 points Mark Squires The Wine Advocate

2007 Pó de Poeira Douro Branco
"The 2007 PO DE POEIRA BRANCO is a Douro blend and is showing rather nicely at the moment, particularly impressive considering that a just-bottled sample I had at the winery months earlier seemed to have a variety of problems. This is actually quite interesting now, piercing and steely, with some mouth puckering intensity on the finish, and good aromatics up front. It will calm down a bit with age, but many will like it just this way. Fresh, pure and pristine, with considerable intensity on the finish, it would be a great shellfish matchup. I’m often disappointed when assigning longer drinking windows to Douro whites, but the acidity may preserve this for an extra year or so. It reminds me a bit of a wine from Moncao. Drink now-2011." 89 points Jay Miller The Wine Advocate

2008 Quinta de la Rosa Rosé Dourosa
A blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa, Tinta Barroca and Tinta Roriz. The Rosé is made from the free run juice when making vintage port. The lagares (granite tanks) are filled with grape and before they are crushed. From these tanks the taps are opened to let the juice run off, allowing the creation of this sumptuous rose. The wine is fermented and matured in stainless steel and bottled the following May. More meaty than most rosés, it still has the appropriate delicacy.

2007 Quinta de la Rosa Tinto Dourosa
Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa, Tinta Barroca and Tinta Roriz. Fermented in stainless steel vats at low temperatures to retain fruit and freshness, the wine is then partially matured in older French oak barrels and partially in tank for up to 12 months.
"The 2007 TINTO douROSA is rather pointed and sharp, without much flesh, but with good fruit flavor. A bit lean, it is a little harsh on opening, but promises to come around with a few months more in the bottle. It should then be drunk young as there is not enough mid-palate concentration here to justify holding the wine. Drink now-2011. " 84 points Mark Squires The Wine Advocate

2007 Pó de Poeira Douro Tinto
"The 2007 PO DE POEIRA, is a Douro blend of old vines with younger vines of Sousao and Touriga Nacional. After a disappointing 2006 (hardly the only wine that had issues in that vintage), this is a lovely second wine this year, another of the lower priced entrants in 2007 that makes this a good vintage for bargain hunters (Winemaker Jorge Moreira also did a fine job with his La Rosa Tinto this year.) Bright and lifted, with a bitter chocolate note initially on the finish, this is firm on the finish, succulent and lingering. A trace of funk early on blew off quickly. As it aired out, it expanded in the glass for awhile and became quite delicious. It does thin faster than its big brother, reviewed this issue, and it was a bit tart the next day, but it is a good value pick that got fruitier and more flavorful, while retaining some character, complexity and elegance. It should show very well in the short to mid-term. Drink now-2017." 90 pts Jay Miller The Wine Advocate

2007 Poeira Douro Tinto
"The 2007 TINTO, an old vines field blend, is the flagship wine here. This year’s version is graceful, aromatic, exuberant and sweet. It is refreshing and nicely structured, and really needed some time to show its best and develop some complexity. It had no more depth on opening—and seemed not to have as much—as the “Po,” the second wine reviewed this issue, but as it aired out, it showed far more persistence and expanded in the glass while the second wine, by contrast, thinned just a little. Had I scored these quickly based on 90 second tastes on release, I might actually have preferred the second wine, but this kept asserting itself, showing more finesse and more delicious fruit as it fleshed out, better aromatics and more complexity with air. By Day 2, it was no longer a contest, the Tinto showing powerful and pristine. Drink 2011-2022" 93 points Jay Miller The Wine Advocate
