Dear Wine Aficionado,
Winter and red wines go hand in hand but our other little delight to drink over winter are the sweeter styles of great German riesling. This week we are offering a 6-pack from one of the greatest riesling producers in the world Joh Jos Prum. If you hadn't gathered from our newsletters, we adore Pinot Noir and one of our favourite local producers is Hurley Vineyard in Balnarring, Mornington Peninsula. If you haven't tried these wines before you'd be forgiven as they are small dedicated vignerons, but here is your chance to discover one of Australia's little gems. This week we are offering a pre-arrival of the sublime 2008 climats; Lodestone, Hommage and Garamond. Regards, The Europa Cellars team; John, Aidan, Nick, Boon & Sam view newsletter online view newsletter as pdf J. J. Prum 6-pack “The [JJ Prum] Estate remains where it has been for decades: at the summit.” Stephen Brook, The Wines of Germany, Mitchel Beazley The key to the iconic status this estate has enjoyed for decades lies undeniably in the location of their vineyards. Situated in the prestigious Mittelmosel (middle Mosel) area of the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer wine region, the vineyards are dotted with famous wine towns Berkastel, Grach and Wehlen. Opposite the latter on a very steep south-west facing slope lies the most illustrious vineyard of all: the Wehlen Sonnenuhr. Joh Jos Prüm owns 5 hectares of the 50 hectare Sonnenuhr site which is made up of stony weathered grey slate. Other vineyards include sites surrounding the Sonnenuhr - Graach and Zeltlingen. More than half of the estate's 13.5 ha of vineyards are ungrafted, as the phylloxera louse cannot survive in these slate soils. Stuart Pigott notes: “For wine lovers around the world the Wehlener Sonnenuhr name is synonymous with great Riesling. In top vintages the site yields the richest, silkiest, most seductive wines on the Mosel. The fame of these Rieslings is inextricably linked with that of the Joh Jos Prüm estate.” These wines are mostly from the superb 2007 vintage in the Mosel and are terrific drinking now but will seriously reward cellaring for those with patience. 2007 J. J. Prum 'Bernkasteler Badstube' Spatlese $90 Riesling "Floral, green apple, creamy, peach skin aromas. Round, slightly foamy mousse with medium body and acidity. Apple, nutty, honey, peach skin, citrus flavours. A slightly sweet style but fresh and easy to consume." 2007 J. J. Prum 'Graacher Himmelreich' Spatlese $110 Riesling "Almost water white. Quite pungent, fresh cut grass scent. Intensely citrus, possibly even mandarin, this is a classically structured Loire Sauvignon; refreshing and long." 2007 J. J. Prum 'Wehlener Sonnenuhr' Spatlese $115 Riesling "Vouvray in every way mildly sweet, mildly acidic. Very easy to drink. Has characteristic full mouth-feel with flavors of pear, citrus, and sweet apple. Nice wine for sweeter wine lovers to enjoy without excluding the dry white consumers." 2006 J. J. Prum 'Zeltinger Sonnenuhr' Auslese $95 Riesling "The nose is classic seashore with a hint of savoury barrel ferment. In the mouth it's linear, minerally, savoury and beautiful with a long impressive mineral finish." 2006 J. J. Prum 'Wehlener Sonnenuhr' Auslese $116 Riesling "The bouquet is a blend of black cherries, dark berries, chocolate and soil tones. On the palate the wine is fullish, long and juicy, with silky tannins and sneaky length and grip." 2007 J. J. Prum 'Bernkasteler Badstube' Auslese $115 Riesling "Has a mature edge, with hints of cedar and incense, framing the core of black cherry, tobacco and tar notes. Slightly edgy finish." Shelf Price for 6 Pack $631.00 OFFER PRICE $537.00! download order form Hurley Vineyard Pre-arrival Trisha and Kevin are dedicated Pinot Noir specialists and dedicated Terroir-ists. Their vineyard in Balnarring on the Mornington Peninsula is planted in 3 vineyard blocks; Lodestone, Hommage and Garamond. Lodestone is a north facing 3 acre block planted to the Burgundian clones 114, 115 and 777 as well as MV6. Hommage is a north east, well sheltered 2 acre block almost completely planted to clone G5V15. Garamond is an east facing 3 acre block, sheltered and the coolest of the three, planted solely with MV6. This is only the 4th time all 3 single vineyards have been released since they began in 2001, and it is with much pleasure that we bring you these truly special, thought provoking wines. 2008 Hurley Vineyard 'Lodestone' $45 Pinot Noir "It smells of red fruits, flowers, undergrowth and talc. Medium-bodied and firm in the mouth, it is softened with sweet fruit, powdery tannins and the roundness of nuts. The acidity is ripe and fresh. The oak is in its proper place. It is clean, pure, satisfying and long." 2008 Hurley Vineyard 'Hommage' $50 Pinot Noir "Aromas of plum, briar berry and violet rise to the nose, enveloped in something alluring. Medium-bodied, it tastes (as Hommage does) of ripe plums, wine gums and jubes, wrapped in fine, mouth-coating tannins. The sweet fruit is balanced by vibrant acidity. It is very fresh and lingering." 2008 Hurley Vineyard 'Garamond' $55 Pinot Noir "Scented and complex, this smells of forest berries, plums and spice, plus flowers and human sweat. Firm in the palate, it tastes of summer fruits, cake spice and meat, balanced by tangy acidity and judicious oak. This is layered and intense but fresh, balanced and elegant very stylish indeed."
