Greek Tasting In-store
Bistro & Delicatessen News
Dear Wine Aficionado,

Being a store that does specialise in European wine we would be forgiven for all the European propaganda in relation to our offers so this week we are offering a selection of New Zealand red wines. Most people know them for their Pinot Noir but we have also included some sublime examples of Bordeaux style blends and Northern Rhone inspired Syrah.

Having said that it would be a newsletter from us without something European so we are also offering a cross section of the Iberian Peninsula focusing on Spain and Portugal with some varieties you are familiar with and some you hopefully are not.

And lastly, we're sure all of you read todays Epicure and the fantastic article by Jane Faulkner on Greek wine. In response to this we have decided to have a tasting in-store of a selection of greek wines, including those reviewed. So pop past the cellars between 2-4pm, this Saturday, August 7th, to see what all the fuss is about.

Regards,

The Europa Cellars team;
John, Aidan, Nick, Boon & Sam

New Zealand 6-pack

New Zealand is without a doubt a cool climate wine growing country. This can make it difficult for red grapes to ripen and it is because of this that they have a stigma of producing green and stalky red wines.

However their wines are going from strength to strength and we are delighted to bring you these wines which are truly world class and could give the French a run for their money. We have a couple of Pinot Noir's from Marlborough and Martinborough, a couple of Syrah's from Hawkes Bay and 2 superb Bordeaux blends from Celvedon and Waiheke Island.

2007 Domaine Georges Michel $33
Pinot Noir
"An elegant wine with seductive spice and smoke aromas leading into a cascade of ripe red berry fruit flavours, forest floor characters and a hint of chocolate, encompassed by velvety smooth tannins."

2008 Leung Estate 'Ma Maison' $57
Pinot Noir
"An aroma of violets, black cherry and ripe plum. Lovely middle palate which is quite warm and savoury but yet with an abundance of fruit. What we really like about this is its balance, complexity and the vibrant fresh middle palate."

2007 Bilancia $47
Syrah
"A feminine, perfumed wine thanks in part to having been co-fermented with a small amount of Viognier. Soft with seductively sweet fruit and soft tannins. Red berries/raspberry, plum, cracked pepper and subtle spicy oak."

2006 Brookfields 'Hillside' $58
Syrah
"Dense, weighty wine with a strong Rhone-like cracked pepper character that is supported by strong fruit flavours. Big and powerful red. Long, spicy."

2006 Puriri Hills 'Estate' $50
Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec
"The bouquet is perfumed, the palate is rich and welcoming, with concentrated plum, herb and spice flavours, seasonedwith quality French oak, and silky tannins. It’s a very refined, harmonious and supple wine."

2000 Obsidian $78
Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec
"True Bordeaux style it is as inky and dark in colour as its name suggests. The nose is all leather armchairs and vanilla, the palate luscious sweet ripe fruit. Plums, blackberries and gorgeous soft oakiness make this a stylish mouthful that lasts and lasts."

Iberian 6-pack

It seems Melbourne is still Spanish crazy so here is a selection of wines, some are old favourites and others are new instore that gives a brief look at some of the delights from the Iberian Peninsula. Featured here is a favourite of ours, El Wanderer. Made by Andrew Marks (whose parents have Gembrook Hill in the Yarra Valley, which he also assists in making) it is a Carinyena from the Costa Brava, a stone's throw from El Bulli, sourced from 80 year old bush vine. It is inky, thought provoking and utterly delightful.

2006 Valdamor $34
Albarino
"A dense white, with a rich texture that carries the peach, pear, almond and anise flavors. The firm acidity knits this together, carrying through the refreshing finish."

2008 Marques de Alella $31
Pansa Blanca
"Deliciously fruity in aroma. Mouthfilling, long and absolutely distinctive: its lively, peppery freshness counterbalanced by a modicum of the residual, grapey sweetness that is the hallmark of the variety."

2007 Luis Pato $22
Bical, Cerceal, Secialinho
"Smokey thistle and fresh green leaves, apricot and peach with just a touch of lemon peel. More smoke, a bit of caramel, peach and apricot. Slight oily texture and very smooth. Minerally acid with plenty of length."

2009 Cillar de Silos 'Joven' $41
Tempranillo
"Very perfumed with ripe blackberry that evolves into blood plums and currents with some air time.  There is some earth and undergrowth in there as well.  Very expressive and almost full bodied in the mouth, dark cherry and river rocks with a touch of  bloody/animally complexity.  A nice finish with a minerally tang."

2005 Quinta de la Rosa Douro $34
Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa, Tinta Barroca, Tinta Roriz,
"An extracted, intense style, with plenty of red raspberry, mineral and chocolate flavors that are fringed by exotic Asian spice notes. The mouthfilling finish echoes the fruit and spice flavors, topped off by some cappuccino notes."

2008 El Wanderer $54
Carinyena
"It has spicy notes and nutty characters, aspects of dried herbs, iodine and perhaps tar. It’s tight and reductive and highly individual."
