Dear Wine Aficionado,
With the 'official' first day of spring upon us tomorrow, we'd be forgiven for getting exciting about getting stuck into a bottle of rose, so this weeks What We're Drinking is the divine new vintage Tempier rose. Don't forget that we have secured a fantastic instore tasting for you featuring Matthieu from Domaine du Coulet, one of the top producers in Cornas. He will be hosting a tutored tasting through his 2007 releases on Tuesday 7th September from 6pm until 7pm. Tickets are $20 and there are still some spaces left for this tasting so call or reply to this email to book your seat. Lastly this week we are re-visiting our 2009 Bordeaux primeurs as we have added another two producers to the already large offer; Chateau Siran from Margaux and Chateau Chauvin from Saint Emilion. There are still wines available for our previous offers and there really is some terrific value for money. So if you haven't ordered or would like to add anything please refer to the order form below. | This is a new section we are devoting to something new we have to the shop and something we find delicious. "Domaine Tempier is Bandol's best and most storied producer; its wines have made a noticeable upswing in quality under the leadership of winemaker Daniel Ravier. Cabassaou, La Tourtine and La Migoua refer to specific plots on the estate." Wine Spectator "There should be an entire book about the Domaine Tempier” “…today makes the finest red wine of Provence." Kermit Lynch, Adventures on the Wine Route 2009 Domaine Tempier Rose $61 Bandol, France "Red berries, peach skin, smoky minerals and dried lavender on the nose, picks up peppery spices with air, which carry onto the palate and add nerve and zest to the sweet raspberry and cherry flavors. Firm and focused but far from hard, with excellent finishing grip and chewy, unflagging persistence." |

Domaine du Coulet Tasting “Matthieu Barret represents the future in Cornas. His domaine is, in my opinion, the single most exciting new domaine in the appellation today.” James Molesworth, Wine Spectator Domaine du Coulet was founded by Matthieu’s grandfather after WWII, and over the years has supplied grapes to some of the best known producers in the Northern Rhône, including Chapoutier and Delas. While his father eschewed the agrarian lifestyle, opting instead for a career in international business, Matthieu knew early on that he wanted to be a vigneron. In 1998 at the age of only 23, he took over the family’s 25 acres of well-situated vines on the terraced hillsides of Cornas. From the beginning, Matthieu has employed natural, organic practices and by 2002 (his second year of production) the domaine received its biodynamic certification. With each vintage, Matthieu has gained a better understanding of his vine parcels and through thoughtful experimentation, he now turns out a remarkable selection of Cornas wines that express the unique nuances of each micro-terroir. No new oak, no racking, minimal use of sulfur and no fining or filtration. Pure, sexy Syrah. Tuesday 7th September, 6pm-7pm, $20pp Bordeaux 2009 Re-visited This week we couldn't help ourselves and have purchased from another two Chateau's to add to our 2009 Bordeaux primeur campaign. These wines are marked in red and are at the top of the order form below. The wines we still have to offer are a diverse range from the more humble Petit Chateaux to some of the more prestigious Classed Growths. These days the best value in Bordeaux these days is in the Petit Chateaux that offer terrific value for money and affordable everyday drinking. The prices on the order form below are offered to you at our first tranche prices, so stock up those cellars now. "First, and most importantly, for some Médocs and Graves, 2009 may turn out to be the finest vintage I have tasted in 32 years of covering Bordeaux. From top to bottom, 2009 is not as consistent as 2005, but the peaks of quality in 2009 may turn out to be historic." Robert Parker "A number of Bordeaux vintners say that their wines are already so fantastic that they are enjoying them straight from the vat. The year (2009) started with wet weather for most of winter and spring. Some areas were hard hit by hail in the spring. Yet summer weather was impeccably warm, dry and sunny. The water table in the soil was high enough to offset the dry summer, and a little rain in September revived the vines completely, helping the fruit mature to near perfection." James Suckling "Left Bank that provides the most pleasure,... Do not dismiss the Right Bank, in particular a clutch of breathtaking Cabernet Franc based Pomerols and Saint Emilions" Neal Martin Wine Advocate "I have never given so many really high scores when tasting en primeur anywhere." Jancis Robinson "Yesterday I had the enormous pleasure of tasting 25 Sauternes 2009 blind at Ch Coutet and by and large they were fantastic. And so much more difficult to make than the red wines that get so much attention. Lots of richness and botrytis. I loved particularly Ch Suduiraut, Guiraud, Nairac, La Tour Blanche and Doisy-Daëne." Jancis Robinson The 2009s seem to have a 'togetherness' that will make them at once approachable in their youth but also probably, as for the 1929s, unexpectedly long-lived." Bill Blatch Vintex Bordeaux Negociant on Jancis Robinson's Purple Pages NB: These wines are expected to arrive in mid 2012. bordeaux 09 reviews download order form Bistro & Delicatessen News The delicatessen is fully stocked with an array of cured meats, both local and imported, as well as a selecion of terrines, dips, pastes, chutneys and cheese for all your entertaining needs.
