Bistro & Delicatessen News
Dear Wine Aficionado,

So much for spring! This week we have gone back to a rich and savoury treat, Aglianico. Some call it the Barolo of the South, we just call it delicious.

TONIGHT we have Matthieu from Domaine du Coulet, one of the top producers in Cornas. He will be hosting a tutored tasting through his 2007 releases on Tuesday 7th September from 6pm until 7pm. Tickets are $20 and we have had a few cancellations so call or reply to this email to book your last minute seat.

This week we are offering a couple of 6-packs that both feature the left of centre varietals we love to show. The first is a global offering following on from the the first Alternate Varietal 6-pack that featured a couple of weeks ago. The second focusses squarely on Italy, because there really are so many indigenous variety's to sample.

Regards,

The Europa Cellars team;
John, Aidan, Nick, Boon & Sam

What We're Drinking
This is a new section we are devoting to something new we have to the shop and something we find delicious.

Bruce and Jenni Chalmers began growing winegrapes in the mid 1980’s.  Over the years their Euston vineyard grew to become the most diverse and one of the largest privately owned vineyards in Australia. However, it was in the 1990’s at an Australian Society of Viticulturists and Oenologists seminar in Mildura where Phil Reedman, wine buyer for Tesco the UK supermarket giant, got up and said Australian wine was becoming boring. He challenged all those present to come up with something new. They decided to do something about it.

2005 Chalmers Aglianico $16
Murray Darling, NSW

"Black cherry and ripe blood plums with some savoury tobacco, coffee and smokey notes."

Domaine du Coulet Tasting
“Matthieu Barret represents the future in Cornas. His domaine is, in my opinion, the single most exciting new domaine in the appellation today.” James Molesworth, Wine Spectator

Domaine du Coulet was founded by Matthieu’s grandfather after WWII, and over the years has supplied grapes to some of the best known producers in the Northern Rhône, including Chapoutier and Delas. While his father eschewed the agrarian lifestyle, opting instead for a career in international business, Matthieu knew early on that he wanted to be a vigneron. In 1998 at the age of only 23, he took over the family’s 25 acres of well-situated vines on the terraced hillsides of Cornas.
From the beginning, Matthieu has employed natural, organic practices and by 2002 (his second year of production) the domaine received its biodynamic certification. With each vintage, Matthieu has gained a better understanding of his vine parcels and through thoughtful experimentation, he now turns out a remarkable selection of Cornas wines that express the unique nuances of each micro-terroir. No new oak, no racking, minimal use of sulfur and no fining or filtration. Pure, sexy Syrah.

Alternate Varietals #2
This week we have put together a selection of 6 wines focusing on the unusual with an aim to educate you on varietals you possibly haven't tried before. The wines come from France, Luxembourg, Spain, Macedonia, Austria and Argentina.

2005 Bernard Massard Rivaner $16
Grevenmacher, Luxembourg
"Delicate and subtle notes of greengage and lemon, hints of spice and gentle acidity complete this dry white."

2005 Valduero 'Viadero' Albillo $19
Ribera del Duero, Spain
"Delicate fruit aromas reminiscent of pineapple and grapefruit, very characteristic of this variety. On the palate, the wine is well balaned, with good length and acidity."

2007 Colome Torrontes $27.50
Calchaquies, Argentina
"Gardenia and fresh aromas of honeysuckle, roses and hints of lemon and grapefruit are present. On the palate, this wine is intense and well balanced with an attractive acidity and minerality."

2007 Kir-Yianni 'Paranga' Xinomavro Blend $28
Florina, Macedonia
"Bright red fruits with a bit of spice and a touch of cinnamon. As you taste the wine, you first get a rush of vibrant fruitiness, some cherry and raspberry but that then transforms into a drier, lightly spiced finish. The spicy flavors are not bold, but are more subtle."

2008 Pittnauer 'Dorflagen' St Laurent $40
Burgenland, Austria
"It’s spicy, easy-going, elegant, and ripe. A red wine that is light on its feet, but bright and funky. Chewy finish. Different, in a good way."

2006 Jacques Puffeney Poulsard $43
Arbois, France
"Fresh and delicate aromas of spicy red fruit, subtle herbs and fragrant white pepper mix in a subtle blend. Light-bodied but intense, tart cherries and white pepper meet crisp acidity and smooth but perceptible tannins."

2007 Cefalicchio 'Rosso Canosa' Nero di Troia, Montepulciano $31

"This fabulously wild and super-tasty red is a blend of two-thirds nero di troia, a grape that produces particularly deep-purple-coloured wine, and one-third montepulciano: lots of ripe, intense, almost prune-like black fruit and earthy, savoury spice."

2007 Cristo di Campobello 'Adenzia' Nero d'Avola, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon $33

"Gorgeous textural richness in its elegant, silky tannins. Despite its considerable concentration, the wine literally floats on the palate with layers of perfumed red fruits. Everything is perfectly balanced in this harmonious, utterly impeccable wine."
