Dear Wine Aficionado,
We trust you all had a great Christmas full of too much food and too much good booze, as we certainly did. To freshen us up between one celebration and the next we have been tucking into the spectacular 2010 Douro Branco from Quinta de la Rosa. Douro whites can be fat, clunky, cumbersome wines and that is what sets this wine apart, it is so beautifuly poised, so perfectly balanced and with such fine minerality, we couldn't help going back to it again and again. We are asking you this week to make a note in your brand new 2012 diaries as we will be having our huge annual sale during the month of January. This year you will also be able to order via the newsletter, but as always we will have some treats in store only. Full details will be in next weeks newsletter. Lastly, the wine store is trading as normal but over the next two weeks the Bistro & Delicatessen will be open for breakfast and lunch only, closing daily at 4pm. Normal trading hours will resume from Monday 9th January. The Europa Cellars team; John, Aidan, Nick & Boon view newsletter online view newsletter as pdf What We're Drinking |

| 2010 Quinta de la Rosa Branco $32 "The 2010 Branco, 50/50 matured and fermented in oak and tank respectively, is a blend of 35% Viosinho and 35% Rabigato with various other typical field blend grapes, such as Gouveio and Codega do Larinho. With a rather unctuous texture early on and in its youth, this wine seems both mouth coating and utterly delicious. It also seems like the best one I’ve seen from La Rosa. With air, it became fresher and crisper, developing a hint of grapefruit and a spicy note. It came around nicely overall. It may not be profound and complex, but it sure was tasty. The winery suggests that this can age for up to 5 years, but however long it holds in theory, I suspect it will be at peak and not develop much. For best results, drink now and maybe in the next year or two. Certainly, its youthful exuberance and freshness is an important component of what makes it special at the moment. Drink now-2014." 90 points, Mark Squires, The Wine Advocate #198, December 2011 |
