| Introduction What We're Drinking The January Sale Continues Bistro & Delicatessen |

Dear Wine Aficionado,
This week we have needed a little soothing summer refreshment to ease the madness of our January sale, as such we turned to an old favourite; Austria's Gruner Veltliner. The wine we are particularly enamoured with is the 2010 Domane Wachau Federspiel which not only represents excellent value, but is a terrific introduction and totally varietal expression of the grape. White pepper, firm yellow stone fruit with hints of yellow apple and guava greet your nose, while a crunchy green apple acidity and spicy minerality produce the perfect palate for summery days by the tennis court, and after all what should better suit watching Roger "the Fed" Federer thrashing a lowly ranked player than drinking a racy Domane Wachau 'FED'erspiel Gruner Veltliner?! Our January sale continues this week, with the addition of Maison Lupe-Cholet and Domaine du Chateau Gris. We had a terrific response on the Zind-Humbrecht wines last week which have almost all sold out, also some more of the Dugat-Py wines have sold out, so if you missed last weeks newsletter don't delay in getting your orders in early. And just remember that these wines are going out for as much as 50% discount, which is below cost! The Domäne Wachau is situated in the heart of the Wachau Valley, one of Europe’s oldest cultural landscapes. The Wachau is a gorge of only 33 km in length. Steep slopes terraced with dry stone walls, fortressed mountains, vineyards, orchards, rare flora and fauna as well as a rich cultural tradition make this a unique area in all of Europe. For this reason, the Wachau has also been named a World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. 2005 brought a new, young, enthusiastic team to this historic property on the banks of the Danube river. Headed by general manager Roman Horvath and enologist Heinz Frischengruber, this team brings fresh ideas, personality and a new energy to the historic cooperative formerly known as Freie Weingartner Wachau. This dynamic duo produces wines which showcase the fruit character and mineral finesse provided by the Wachau valley's unique diversity. Domäne Wachau is the largest cooperative in the Wachau valley, and is made up of 600 contributing members farming slightly less than 500 hectares, or a full one third of the total region's vineyards. Each individual member is challenged to produce the best wines possible, and paid for the quality of their production first, the quantity second. The showplace of the winery is the baroque cellar palace depicted on the label. 2010 Wachau Gruner Veltliner Federspiel 'Terrassen' $25 "The Domane Wachau 2010 Gruner Veltliner Federspiel Terrassen displays juicy, faintly but attractively bitter character reminiscent of a lime-drizzled cucumber, cress, lettuce and dandelion salad. The finish here delightfully mingles refreshment with invigoration born of crunch, peppery bite, and piquancy. This excellent value introduction to its genre should be enjoyed over the next couple of years." 88 points, David Schildknecht, Wine Advocate #197, October 2011 |
