Dear Wine aficionado,

Please note that the offers contained herein may have expired. Please do not hesitate to contact us for further information relating to these offers, or any of your fine wine needs.

Our Game Night at Sarti is set to be the culinary event of the year - chef Riccardo Momesso has created an utterly mouthwatering menu of gamey dishes to accompany the line-up of Pinot Noirs. The only advice we have is: Expect the absolute best and come hungry! See below for more details.

Concentrating on the Rhône this week, our offers include the much in-demand wines of Clos des Papes (Châteauneuf-du-Pape), and Domaine du Coulet (Cornas). For both these producers availability is regrettably very limited, so please move quickly to secure your order. Wine of the Week

2006 Mas de Bressades Cuvée Tradition Rouge, Costières de Nîmes
Full Price $23.00 / Wine of the Week Price $20.50 / Dozen Unit Price $19.50

A firm Europa favourite, back after a short absense! When it comes to drinkability and affordability, this wine is very hard to beat. "Another excellent estate is Mas des Bressades. Readers cannot ask for more hedonistic, flavorful, mouth-filling, juicy wines than these efforts from Mas des Bressades, an estate that consistently makes the pages of my Best Buy reports." Robert Parker

A blend of Shiraz and Grenache, this wine has a handsome, intense red colour. The nose offers a bouquet of ripe fruit marked by scents of havana tobacco and a range of spices, opening out nicely as it matures. A lovely attack and nice clean impression on the palate, with red cherries, dried herbs and earthy notes. A concentrated, tasty wine with lively, long-lasting aromas.

Feature Event

Feathers & Fur Game Night

Our Game Night at Sarti promises to be one of the highlights of the year. Firstly, because we are in the hands of chef Riccardo Momesso, and secondly, because we have a line-up of absolutely stunning Pinot Noirs.

Riccardo Momesso, featured in an article in this month's Vogue magazine, has firmly established himself as one of Melbourne's most exciting and innovative chefs. Since childhood he has been passionate about food, something his Italian upbringing installed and fervently kept growing in him. Lucky for us, this passion reaches its peak when it comes to game - being an avid hunter himself, Riccardo has an exquisite touch with meats like rabbit, venison and pheasant (all of which are on the menu) and his style of cooking and flavour combinations are nothing short of breathtaking. Bob Hart (Herald Sun, 21 June 2008) had the following to say: "Sarti has always been good: a lively haunt offering stylish and authentic Italian food. But since Italian maestro Riccardo Momesso took charge of the stoves and became a partner in the business a year ago, Sarti has gone from very good to sensational. Dinner last week, my first since Momesso arrived, was as dazzling as any Italian meal I have eaten in a decade." Also, to read John Lethean's (The Age) impressive review on Sarti, please click here

A little more information on the some of the wines we will be drinking: Allies, situated in the Mornington Peninsula, is a collaboration between David Chapman and Barney Flanders, both of whom will be present on the night to tell us a bit more about their wines. James Halliday, (The Australian 16 Feb 08) says: "Allies is one of the most impressive new wineries of the 1000-plus such ventures I have encountered over the past five years." The pair makes a beautiful Mornington Pinot; a wine which displays intense flavours and complexity, without compromising on elegance and subtlety. Another great Aussie Pinot we'll show is the Lance's Vineyard Yarra Valley Pinot from winery, Punch. James Lance (who'll also attend the dinner) and his wife Claire started their own label, Punch, in 2005, and it has immediately found favour with critics and drinkers alike. In his newest (2008) Wine Companion, James Halliday gives their 2005 Pinot Noir a 97 point-rating, saying it has "Excellent pinot varietal flavour from the first moment to the last". Good stuff.

We will add to the evening with a couple of red Burgundies to match our Australian counter-parts, after all we are European specialists

Sarti is one of Melbourne's "must do" restaurants, and they are pulling out all the stops for us - call now to book your place for this once-off experience.

Clos des Papes, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

As early as 1896 Paul Avril's grandfather started bottling wine under the mark Clos des Papes, and today the estate is owned and run by Paul, together with his son Vincent Avril. The property has 32 hectares under vines, 3 of which are planted with white varieties. These vineyards are made up of 24 different parcels spread around the town of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. One of these parcels is a vineyard surrounded by walls (clos), nearby the pope's castle, and from here the domaine received its name. Clos des Papes is a benchmark Châteauneuf producer, and its reputation is firmly backed up by the impressive quality of the wines. The domaine not only produces excellent and sought-after reds, but also sets the standard with its eminent white Châteauneufs: “Clos des Papes' white wine, made from equal parts of each white variety allowed, can also be exceptional, with firm, white flower and mineral notes that turn to Meursault-like honey and almond as it ages.” (Wine Specator). Also, amazingly enough, the 2006 Rouge seems to look even better than the 2005 - see reviews below.

2004 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc / Shelf Price $128.00 / Offer Price $115.00
"One of the best white wines of the appellation is made at Clos des Papes, the non-malolactic yet full-bodied and powerful 2004 Clos des Papes Chateauneuf du Pape blanc. Notes of white peaches, pears, citrus oil, and honeysuckle are present in the medium to full-bodied, fleshy 2004. It shows good acidity and a lively, vibrant mouthfeel. Drink it over the next 4-5 years, although some vintages have an amazing ability to last much longer." 89 points, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate

2007 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc / Shelf Price $117.00 / Offer Price $105.00

Made from equal parts of Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Clairette, Bourboulenc and Picpoul. (No ratings available yet).

2001 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge / Shelf Price $206.00/ Offer Price $185.00 (limited to 3 btls per person)
"Paul Avril feels that purchasers of the 2001 Chateauneuf du Pape should “wait ten years” before drinking it. A blend of 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah, and 5% Counoise, all aged in large wood foudres prior to being bottled without filtration, was produced from low yields of 27 hectoliters per hectare. A deep ruby/purple color is accompanied by a sweet bouquet of figs, raspberries, new saddle leather, autumnal forest floor, and resiny notes. Full-bodied with beautiful purity as well as a strikingly rich mouthfeel, this seriously endowed Chateauneuf admirably conceals its 14.5% alcohol. A structured finish and impressive extract levels suggest considerable longevity. This firmly tannic, intensely concentrated 2001 boasts great aromatic and palate presence, but it remains young and unevolved. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2020+." 95 points, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate

2006 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge / Shelf Price $165.00 / Offer Price $148.50 (limited to 3 btls per person)
"The 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape (15.2% alcohol, with essentially the same technical statistics as the 2005) is a completely different animal in terms of tasting. Opulent, full-bodied, and lush, it tastes as if someone had blended 65% of the 2003 with 35% of the 2005, and 2006 was the result. Deep ruby/purple-colored, with a sweet nose of framboise, raspberries, garrigue, spice box, and earth, the wine is gorgeously concentrated, with low acidity, and very ripe but high tannins. The overall impression is one of opulence, generosity, and a sexy, hedonistic style of Chateauneuf du Pape that puts it among the very finest of the vintage. Nevertheless, I still suspect 2-3 years of bottle age will be essential, and this wine will keep for 25 or more years." 96-98 points, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate

Also read below Stephen Tanzer's barrel (or foudre) tasting of the 2006 Rouge:
"Foudre #1 ("the fine one," according to Avril): Bright red. Intense strawberry and raspberry on the nose, with subtle garrigue and minerals adding complexity. Silky red fruit flavors show seductive spice and floral pastille qualities. Finishes with great persistence. Foudre #2 ("the tannic one"): Ruby-red. Bright red fruit aromas, with a deep undercurrent of licorice adding seriousness. The palate shows very spicy bitter cherry and dark berry liqueur flavors, chewy tannic grip and a long, vibrant finish. If this is Avril's idea of tannic in 2006, the final wine should be a supple beauty. Foudre #3 ("the concentrated one," from 80-year-old vines cropped at15 hl/ha): Inky ruby. Rich cherry and cassis aromas, with a deep tapenade quality adding complexity. Sappy, sweet and packing major dark berry punch, this clocks in at 16.5% alcohol, but there's no obvious heat. An approximate blend: "I hate doing this, but why not," said Avril, who doesn't believe that on-the-spot blends are accurate reflections of what winds up in the bottle. But this was his idea, not mine! Dark ruby. Powerful kirsch and blackcurrant aromas, with exotic licorice and fresh floral character expanding with air. Pliant dark berry and bitter cherry flavors carry through the long, sappy finish. A balanced, sweet powerhouse from this vantage point, with the concentration to age for at least a decade or two." 94-97 points, Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

Domaine du Coulet, Cornas

Cornas, meaning 'burnt earth' in Celtic, is famous for its rich, robust and dense wines. Both Louis XV and Cardinal Richelieu are said to have been admirers. The most southerly of the Northern Rhône red wine appellations, Cornas is tiny. It has just 94 ha of vines, which makes it smaller than several single estates in Bordeaux. The granitic south/southeast-facing slopes are planted with just one grape, Syrah.

Under the wakeful eye of Mathieu Barret, Domaine du Coulet is taking big strides. Barret is a young star who runs his 4 hectares of vineyards organically, the only one to do so in Cornas, and is in the process of taking a step further still into Biodymamics. He owns three parcels of south and southeast exposed vines in the Arlettes, Mazards and Reynards that average 30 years old.

2006 Cornas "Brise Cailloux" / Shelf Price $90.50 / Offer Price $81.50
The earlier accessible cuvée of the three, the "Brise Caillou" is made with grapes that come from young vines on slopes and from a parcel of vines at the foot of the slopes. "Slightly meaty but also cedary oak or is that cedary herbaceous fruit? Very peppery Syrah, especially on the palate. Papery fine chalky tannins but lots of them, fresh and lingering." Julia Harding MW (www.jancisrobinson.com)

2005 Cornas "Les Terrasses du Serre" / Shelf Price $152.00 / Offer Price $137.00 (Limited availability)
A blend of the high and low slopes of Arlettes, Mazards and Reynards, Mathieu Barret now uses fewer stalks in the fermentation process for this wine, employing only 10-15% whole bunches and adds the press wine from Brise Caillou and Billes Noires. “The 2006 Cornas Les Terrasses du Serre comes from 35-year-old vines and sees no new oak. 'A classic, traditional expression of Cornas,' said Barret. The wine comes across like a young vintage of Cornas from A. Clape—loaded with dark fig and tar notes—but with far more refined tannins.” Wine Spectator 30th October 2007

2005 Cornas "Billes Noires" / Shelf Price $186.00 / Offer Price $167.50 (Very limited availability)
“The 2006 Cornas Billes Noires, which includes some 80-year-old vines, is packed with dark fig and currant fruit, with a powerfully built tannic structure that manages to stay ultraracy, pumping out sweet tapenade and licorice notes on the finish.”  Wine Spectator 30th October 2007

"Aromatic though dark peppery violet laced black fruit. Rich and inviting. Roasted potato skins. Dry, fine, firm and bags of backbone but also plenty of flesh to fill it out. A big savoury mouthful but with attractive aromatic overlay and respectable freshness." Julia Harding MW

Price correction:

Our apologies: The price of the William Downie Pinot Noir in last week's newsletter was incorrect. To make amends for the error, we are extending the offer by a week. See below for correct pricing.

2007 William Downie Pinot Noir, Yarra Valley
Shelf Price $55.00 / Offer Price $50.00
William Downie was the winemaker at De Bortoli, dedicated solely to the production of their top class Pinot Noirs. He has since left to focus on wines produced under his own name (with a striking label designed by artist Reg Mombassa) - all Pinot Noir of course! Grapes are bought in from carefully selected older vineyards, and in the winery the use of pumps, filtration and fining is avoided. The Burgundian influence in his wine is evident, and hardly suprising since he spends 6 months a year making wine in Burgundy. This wine is stylish, elegant and brimming with pure Pinot-flavours.

Italy's Northeast: Trentino & Alto-Adige
Tonight 12th August 5-7:30pm, In-store, $5*
Both these regions (maybe Alto Adige to a greater extent) have had a myriad of cultural influences over the past number of centuries. Here the Germanic influence (from bordering Switzerland and Austria) have been just a strong as that from the Italian side, which resulted in a rich and varied culture which can be experienced through these amazing wines. We will be featuring two very exciting producers from these regions: Elisabetta Foradori in Trentino makes high-quality red wines from the native Teroldego grape. Her muscular Granato (made only in the best years) is a regular Three Glass winner (Gambero Rosso), and the more affordable monovarietal Teroldego Foradori is stunning in its own right. Foradori also makes a white wine called Myrto, from Sauvignon Blanc and Incrocio Manzoni grapes. Tenuta J. Hofstätter (Alto Adige) makes beautiful Gewurztraminer from his famed Kolbenhof vineyard, and arguably one of the best Pinot Neros (Pinot Noir) in Italy.

Greek Wines

We will be showing wines from a number of Greece's top producers, like Gaia, Kir-Yianni and Tselepos. Come join us to taste wines from Thessaloniki, Santorini, Arcadia and more, and experience varieties like Roditis, Moschofilero, Xinomavro and Agiorgitiko.
