Wine of the Week

2006 Châtaignier Rouge, Domaine de la Citadelle
Shelf Price $23.00 / Offer Price $20.50 / Whole Dozen unit price $19.50

Our longtime customers will know that we at Europa like discovering lesser-known gems, and this is another great find from the south of France. The Cotes du Luberon AOC lies on the border between the Southern Rhône and the region of Provence; a location that draws the benefit of beautiful sun-drenced Mediterranean days, as well as the cooling effect from the Alps and the Rhone Valley.

In 1989 Yves Riusset-Rouard purchased an ancient Provençale farmhouse with 8 hectares of vines. Two decades of hard work and patience followed, with the focus on strict selection of only the best vineyard parcels. Today, Yves and son Alexis, who joined the company in 1995, have succeeded in creating one of the top domaines in the Côte du Luberon.
Domaine de la Citadelle Châtaigner is a lovely, fruit-driven, approachable red, made from 45% Shiraz, 25% Grenache, 25% Carignan and 5% Cinsault. On the nose juicy berry fruit mingles with lively spice aromas. The palate is smooth and round, with black cherry flavours dominating. Beautifully balanced and flavourful finish.

Food Match: Try this wine with a rustic beef and vegetable casserole, or a braised veal or beef dish. A great match also with a Morrocan lamb tagine.

Special Offers

ALBERT MANN Pre-arrival offer, Alsace

"Domaine Albert Mann is one of the success stories of contemporary Alsatian winemaking. The brothers Jacky and Maurice Barthelme use biodynamic viticultural practices, and modern innovation in the cellar to produce wines of impeccable quality stamped by the pronounced flavours of Alsace’s many and varied terroirs. These wines are of a consistently food friendly style, marked by bright, glycerol fruit and supported by fresh acidity that lends the wines their ability to develop and improve with time. The range itself is crowned by a selection of wines from some of the regions most esteemed growths including a riesling from Schlossberg which swaths a rigid backbone of minerality with the kind of vibrant mouth filling orchard fruits that only Alsace can produce." Paul McKirdy, ex-Europa manager, currently working in Alsace

Cremant d'Alsace / Shelf Price $47.00 / Pre-arrival Price $37.60
The Crémant d'Alsace owes a large part of its finesse and originality to the unique personality of each of the Alsace grape varieties, and to the ideal conditions enjoyed by the vineyards : a dry, sunny climate with vineyards slopes bathed in the rising sun and special geological conditions. A harmonious blend of Pinot Blanc, the Auxerrois, the Pinot Gris and the Riesling.

2006 Pinot Blanc Auxerrois / Shelf Price $28.50 / Pre-arrival Price $22.80
Made from 70% Auxerrois, this is always sensational value, and this release does not disappoint in any way. A little drier than previous vintages, with lemon and spice aromas, while the palate explodes with vibrant tropical fruits; a round, yet still lively mouthfeel with plenty of concentration and enough freshness on the finish to draw you back for another glass.

2005 Gewurztraminer / Shelf Price $41.50 / Pre-arrival Price $33.20
Always one of the very best available at this level, this vintage appears to be no exception. A heady, floral perfume of lychee and rosewater, with hints of musk and lime. Really pure. The palate displays good intensity and weight, without veering too far over into the realms of oily viscosity, instead you get a gob of nice acidity to keep everything fresh and balanced.

2006 Riesling Cuvée Albert / Shelf Price $42.50 / Pre-arrival Price $34.00
Lime, mandarine, quartz-like minerals and white flowers on the nose draw you in and make you want to take a sip. There’s a little more zestiness here than the 2005 release, and the palate retains the precise fruit balance that we have come to expect from this wine; excellent concentration and a long, mineral finish.

2006 Pinot Gris Cuvée Albert / Shelf Price $47.00 / Pre-arrival Price $37.60
A complex blend of russet pears, cinnamon, grapefruit, and earthy-mineral notes lead to a palate that is rich and powerful. Layers of concentrated fruit are balanced by a prickle of fresh acidity that holds the wine together and should ensure its development over the next 3 or 4 years.

2006 Riesling Schlossberg Grand Cru / Shelf Price $70.50 / Pre-arrival Price $56.40
The Schlossberg vineyard lies above the commune of Kayserberg and is composed of a type of grey granite, aspect south. It is almost all terraced as it is extremely steep and is one of the greatest sites in Alsace for Riesling. This is Mann's flagship Riesling.
Fresh orange, lime, white flowers, stonefruit and earth are all present in the complex nose of this outstanding Riesling. The palate is classic Schlossberg, concentrated with layers of flavour culminating in an impression of minerals. A backbone of acidity runs through the wine keeping it fresh despite the richness and ensuring a long life ahead of it. Brilliant, as always, and superbly priced for the quality. A lovely wine!

2006 Pinot Gris Hengst Grand Cru / Shelf Price $66.00 / Pre-arrival Price $52.80
A 9th century vineyard whose name translates as ‘stallion, a reference maybe to the muscular, spicy wines from here. To the south of Wintzenheim, this is a large south-east facing vineyard at 270 to 360 metres above sea level. The soils are shallow and stony, mostly limestone, producing wines of great intensity and ageing potential.
Full, lifted aromas of complex, ripe, honeyed orchard fruits; pear, apple, quince, all dusted with baking spices. Rich, but with great purity and detail through the mid-palate. Again there are layers of flavour here, with mineral hints in the background. Everything is in balance and the wine rolls out to a long satisfying finish enlivened by fresh acidity.

Gewurztraminer Furstentum Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru / Shelf Price $72.50 / Pre-arrival Price $58.00
Furstentum is a Grand Cru vineyard which overlaps into the two communes of Kientzheim and Sigolsheim. The clay and limestone soils make it particularly suitable for Gewurztraminer, although some excellent, powerful Riesling is also produced. This is Mann’s top Gewurz and one of the best dry examples the region has to offer. It also offers sensational value for this quality.
Dripping with complex aromas of toffey and fruit cake. Spicy and opulent with a lush, ripe, mouthcoating palate. Very concentrated with excellent balanced acidity that carries through on the lingering finish. Superb.

Half bottles and Magnums also available, please see order form.

ORGANIC SPANISH WHITES
Featuring Catalan producer, L'Olivera, Costers del Segre DO

Costers del Segre ("banks of the River Segre") is a small DO included in the northeastern greater region of Catalunya (which also encompass Priorat, Cava, Penedès and others). This is an arid land and climatic conditions are severe, but winemakers here have learnt to fully utilize all the natural resources at their disposal. These difficult conditions for wine production have resulted in quality far outweighing quantity. Costers del Segre is known for delivering wines with great personality and character, some of them considered among the most unusual in Spain.
L'Olivera is an awe-inspiring enterprise. In 1974, three young women and a priest from Barcelona set up a working cooperative in an area of deep rural poverty to help people with mental handicaps fulfill their potential by working in agriculture. A large farm was built up over the years, eventually specializing in vine-growing. In 2004, it was caring for 11 people with mental handicaps and several more who needed extra help in their lives. In the meantime, wine quality escalated in leaps and bounds, and today their specialized, organic white wines are among the best in the region.

2006 Blanc de Marges / Shelf Price $34.50 / Offer Price $29.50
Made from 100% Parellada, a high quality native grape of Catalunya, and one of the main grapes for making cava. This wine has a yellow straw colour with greenish shades. Mineral and complex aroma, subtle fruit with shades of butter and alluring cedar wood. Beautiful roundness in the mouth shows the presence of harmony and great balance. A crispy freshness lingers on the finish.

2006 Missenyora / Shelf Price $43.00/ Offer Price $36.50
100% Macabeu (a very popular white variety in Spain, also used in making white Rioja). A brilliant yellow straw colour. Lovely floral aromas with light tones of orange and luscious melon fruits. The palate presents a mineral feel, and the soft presence very well-intergrated charry wood. Overall a stunning effort: fruit, minerality, acid and oak blending perfectly together to result in an unusual yet highly satisfying wine.

2006 Eixaders / Shelf Price $56.00 / Offer Price $47.50
100% Chardonnay. Yellow golden colour, with greenish tinges. Clean and powerful aromas that combine fresh fruit (apple, pear, pineapple) with notes of smoky wood and butter. Full-bodied Chardonnay, yet subtle and elegant in mouth. Balanced, round, with good weight and structure, perfectly complemented by a powerful and balanced acidity. The intense finish lingers on and on.
