Wine of the Week

2006 Château de Rochemorin Pessac-Léognan, Sauvignon Blanc
Full Price $44.00 / Wine of the Week Price $39.60 / Dozen Unit Price $37.40

Since 1973, André Lurton, purchaser of the château and 110 hectares of prime land, has been working to restore the estate to its former prestige, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sauvignon and Sémillon grapes. Now entirely renovated, the vineyards at Rochemorin produce attractive, well-balanced reds and whites which bear out the estate's historic reputation.

‘The is an up-and-coming estate in the commune of Martillac, one whose name is believed to have been taken from the Moorish expression for a fortified château. Many Graves observers feel the vineyard is one of the best placed in the appellation, sitting on high ground with superb drainage.’Robert Parker ‘Bordeaux : The Comprehensive Guide

'Cellar Release' Domaine Confuron-Contetidot, Burgundy, France
(Strictly first in first served)

Situated in Vosne-romanee, the Domaine Confuron-Cotetidot is now run by brothers Yves and Jean-Pierre. The brothers have modified the winemaking of their father Jacky - long cold-soaking with full stems and minimal sulphur - and now there is less pigeage longer cuvasions and slightly more new wood (about 33%). The style has always produced long-lived wines and we have small quantities of some back vintages recently arrived in Australia after release from the domaine's cellars.

Bouchard Pere et Fils, Burgundy, France

‘Bouchard Père has propelled itself back into the front rank of Burgundy producers since its purchase byJoseph Henriot in 1995, proving that negociant companies can compete with all but the most single-mindedgrowers.’ Andrew Jefford, The New France

Bouchard, although regarded as a negociant house is, in fact, the largest grower on the Cote D’Or, with 30ha of Grands Crus and 74 of 1er, which allows them more control than most negociants over what happensin the vineyard. The wines, after a period of underachievement in the 80s and early 90s, now sit firmlyamongst the region’s best. 2006 sees another spectacular range of releases that consolidates on their previous success.

2006 Volnay Taillepieds 1er Cru / Shelf Price $130.00 / Offer Price $117.00
Wines from the Taille Pieds can be complete Volnay: fullish in body, beautifully textured, supremely elegant... There is a backbone to these wines which ensures a long life, and if they are a little austere in their youth, so what? They're not made for drinking when three years old." Clive Coates (The Wines of Burgundy)

"A vigorous, bright purple colour in its youth, this wine from one of Volnay’s classiest vineyards shows elegance and vitality, with a fine mix of red fruits right across the palate". (Jasper Morris MW, BBR Buyer)
Maturity: Drink 2011 -2015 (For laying down)

2006 Volnay Clos des Chenes 1er Cru / Shelf Price $130.00 / Offer Price $117.00
Like the Taille Pieds, the Clos des Chenes can be found at the southern end of Volnay, and where, according to Coates, one finds "Volnay's best wines... It (Clos des Chenes) is very pure in its expression of fruit, with a good grip of acidity, and the ability to keep well."

"A slightly riper nose features a violet floral nose along with blue and red pinot fruit that precedes very rich and relatively powerful medium plus-bodied flavors that offer excellent volume and ample mouth coating sap and while the finish is not as precise, there is perhaps even better overall depth." (Burghound, 04/08)

"Good full red. Cool, medicinal aromas of cherry liqueur and graphite. High-toned and perfumed in the mouth, with plenty of richness and a suggestion of marc Suave and aromatic wine, with the liqueur-like quality carrying through to the finish. Not a particularly sweet style, but the tannins are not dry. "
- Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar Issue 137 , March/April 2008

2006 Monthelie “Clos les Champs Fulliot” Premier Cru / Shelf Price $85.00 / Offer Price $76.50
One of the best vineyards in the Monthelie Premiers crus. Very good medium weight, cherry, strawberry and red-currant fruit. While not as complex as Volnay, these are very good Pinot noir at reasonable prices.

2006 Beaune-Teurons Premier Cru / Shelf Price $107.00 / Offer Price $96.30
Counted among the top premiers crus "climats in the greater Beaune appellation.

Claude Dugat - La Gibryotte

Cousin to Bernard, Claude Dugat, is part of the new-wave of Cote D’Or micro-negociants. While Claude does own "climats" in various appellations, including Gevry Chambertin, the Bourgogne rouge is made with bought fruit. This does not detract from the wine in any way, and both show the hallmarks of the house style; total de-stemming and judicious use of oak. Clive Coates rates Calude Dujac as a "fine source" and enjoys the ' marvellously classy, rich and concentrated fruit' of his wines.

“Claude Dugat proves that there is no formula for making great burgundy, and that avant-garde techniques are not necessary either; attention to detail is all that’s required” Andrew Jefford, The New France.

La Gibryotte Bourgogne Rouge $53.00 $ 47.70

La Gibryotte Gevrey Chambertin $106.00 $ 95.40

Tenuta San Guido

2004 Sassicaia $ 240.00 $210.00 (discounted price)
"As a student in Pisa during the 1920's, the Marquis Mario Incisa della Rocchetta dreamed of creating a "noble" wine. Like most of Italian aristocracy at the time, his taste in wine ran strongly to fine Bordeaux.
After settling with his wife, Clarice, into their Tuscan estate at Tenuta San Guido on the Mediterranean Coast, he experimented with several French grape varieties and concluded, “the bouquet I was looking for” was found in the Cabernet."
The vineyards of Tenuta San Guido are dotted around the low hills of the estate, and the fruit shows the maritime influence. Yields are kept relatively low at 5 tonnes p/ha. The Sassicaia is aged in French oak barrels (33% new) for 24 months, and spends 6 months in bottle before being released to market.
"The 2004 Sassicaia is a lovely, understated effort. Medium in body, it presents nuanced layers of sweet dark fruit, licorice, menthol and toasted oak that gradually open onto a finely-knit frame of notable length. Today it appears to be quite reticent and still holding back much of its potential.... Anticipated maturity: 2010-2022." Antonio Galloni, 93 points
