Feature Event

Bastille Day Dinner, at Libertine

For all the Francophiles out there (and everyone else who likes really good food and fine wine): we intend to celebrate Bastille Day in style! Together with Libertine restaurant, our endeavour is to present you with a not-to-be-missed evening of gastronomic bliss.

The wines selected for the evening will take us from the beautiful Loire valley, through the Southwest, making significant stops in Burgundy and the Rhône, and finishing in the unparalleled region of Sauternes. To see the full menu, click here, and for more info on the wines, keep reading...

2003 Monmousseau Cuvée J.M., Touraine
This tantalizing sparkling made from Chenin Blanc is the perfect start to a special evening. Fresh and light, the grape's varietal white peach and melon fruits mix effortlessly with creamy brioche, honey and almond flavours. Its subtle and long-lasting bubbles are extremely fine, which gives the mouthfeel a wonderful finesse. Classic sparkling Chenin, off-dry and silky-smooth.

2007 Gros'Noré Bandol Rosé
Bandol (in the Provence region) is a unique appellation, and one of the few places in France that's sun-drenched and warm enough for the Mourvèdre grape to ripen to perfection. Domaine du Gros’Noré is an excellent producer - one whose self-imposed low yields, manual viticulture and modern winemaking truly embody Bandol's soul. This intriguing wine consists of 40% Mourvèdre, 20% Grenache and 40% Cinsault and displays a beautiful salmon pastel-pink colour. Inviting aromas of stone fruits, fresh nectarine and delicate herbs of Provence mix with a hint of earth or tree-bark. On the palate fresh berries abound, and a chalky minerality, tangerine-tinged acidity as well as the ever-present undertone of earthiness, add layers of complexity. This is no mere summer-quaffer, but a serious, complex wine that will come into its own served alongside Libertine's crustacean & saffron nage.

1999 Lupé-Cholet Latricières-Chambertin, Grand Cru
Les Latricières is a 18.5 acre vineyard which sits immediately to the south of Le Chambertin; its name means the "small miracle". Acclaimed wine writer Huon Hooke (The Age) chose this as one of his favourite drops to drink "away from the office" (The Age, Good Weekend, March 29th, 2008). He also made known that, in addition to the 1999, he has some 02s and 05s in his cellar. We are looking forward to those vintages, but, like Mr Hooke, are very satisfied with the 1999: it is drinking superbly at the moment.

2005 Yves Cuilleron Côte-Rôti Madiniere
Yves Cuilleron has firmly established himself as one of the Northern Rhone's leading winemakers, and this wine is another shining example of his talent to let terroir become transparent in his wines. The Syrah grapes come from 2 ha of south/southeast facing vines on the northern hill of Ampuis commune, and "Madinière” is name of the stream at the foot of the hill. The wine is fleshy, with sumptuous black fruit, cassis and spice aromas. Beautifully balanced and supple.

2003 Château Roumieu-Lacoste Cuvée Leon, Sauternes
"The quality of the wines at Roumieu-Lacoste should not be surprising given the fact that this vineyard is adjacent to the famed Climens in Barsac. The old vines and impeccable winemaking practices of the Dubourdieu family result in consistently high-quality wines." (Robert Parker) The Cuvée Leon is a step up from the Cuvée Classique, and the wine's richness and opulence, together with a fresh acidity and balance, will prove the perfect end to a great meal.

Wine of the Week

2005 Cavallotto Nebbiolo Langhe
Shelf Price $57.00 / Offer Price $51.50 / Dozen unit price $48.50

Those of you who attended our Cavallotto dinner (with Alfio Cavallotto) earlier this year will be able to testify that this week's Wine of the Week is an absolute delight. For five generations the Cavallotto family have been tending vines on the beautiful Bricco Boschis cru in the commune of Barolo, producing wines of exceptional quality. Integrated into their approach is a steadfast devotion to tradition combined with a high regard and respect for modern viticultural and vinification techniques, and accross their range the wines display elegance, richness and longevity. Also, each wine undergoes a Cavallotto family (including sister and mother) taste test before given the go-ahead for release.

The Cavallotto Nebbiolo Langhe is ruby red at the core, with tinges of garnet. An intense yet elegant nose, showing aromas of cherry liqueur, red berries, dark chocolate, tar and earth, as well as a quite ethereal touch of violets and dry roses. The palate is well-balanced with the traditional grippy tannins and a good acidity, which adds a wonderful freshness. The finish is flavourful and persistent. A baby-Barolo...?

Special Offer

2006 Red Burgundy Pre-Arrival Offer
Featuring Domaine de Montille and Domaine Bouchard Père & Fils
Very Limited Stocks - order quickly to avoid dissappointment

Domaine de Montille
This highly respected domaine is located in Volnay, just south of Beaune, and boasts about 7.5 hectares of some of the most sought after vineyards in the Côtes de Beaune. At the helm sits Hubert de Montille (a lawyer "by day"), together with son Etienne and daughter Alix. The winemaking is traditional, and the wines are made in a wonderfully elegant and restrained style - you won't find any "big" wines here. Equally important to note that across the range, the wines show Pinot Noir's true colours - the expression of fruit is pure and delicate.

(Unless specified otherwise, all tasting notes and ratings taken from Allen Meadows' Burghound, Issue 30, April 2008)

2006 Bourgogne / Shelf Price $60.50 / Pre-arrival Price $51.50
A pretty red pinot fruit nose nuanced with subtle earth and crushed dried herbs leads to dusty and precise flavors supported by firm supporting acidity where the finish stops just short of excess dryness. (83-85)/2010+

2006 Beaune “Les Perrières” 1er Cru / Shelf Price $121.00 / Pre-arrival Price $103.00
A more elegant and slightly airier nose of notably pure red berry fruit introduces more obviously mineral-infused flavors that possess fine detail and good vibrancy on the nicely complex and slightly more phenolically ripe finish. (87-89)/2013+

2006 Beaune “Grèves” 1er Cru/ Shelf Price $145.00 / Pre-arrival Price $123.50
An expressive mix of upper and lower register red and blue berry fruit complements rich, intense full and sweet flavors that also possess more elevated phenolic ripeness levels and impressive vibrancy on the long and sappy finish. A lovely effort and the best of these Beaune 1ers. (88-91)/2013+

Volnay "La Carelle" 1er Cru / Shelf Price $165.50 / Pre-arrival Price $140.50
From a tiny and little-known cru just north of Champans and downhill for the Clos de la Bousse d'Or. This wine shows a femininity and refinement that is true to the site - delightful. (EC)

2006 Volnay “Les Mitans” 1er Cru / Shelf Price $190.00 / Pre-arrival Price $161.50
(25+ year old vines). This is also quite aromatically restrained with an elegant and distinctly floral nose of red pinot and dark berry fruit aromas that are in keeping with the finer and even more finely detailed middle weight flavors that offer upper impressive pure and backend minerality. As it almost always is, this is a wine of subtlety and grace and while the finish is slightly dry at present, there is a good chance that it will eventually round out. (89-90)/2013+

2006 Volnay “Taillepieds” 1er Cru / Shelf Price $201.00 / Pre-arrival Price $171.00
Historically, this may be the most under rated wine in the de Montille portfolio with its ripe, airy and ultra pure nose of mineral-suffused red pinot fruit that is in perfect keeping with the finely detailed, layered and firm medium-bodied flavors that are sweet, fresh and vibrant, all wrapped in a youthfully austere finish that exudes that wonderful quality of underlying tension. Terrific. (90-92)/2014+

2006 Pommard “Les Pézerolles” 1er Cru / Shelf Price $190.00 / Pre-arrival Price $161.50
An equally elegant if rather different nose features a beautiful mélange of red berries and plum notes that also blend in nuances of earth and stone that are also reflected on the detailed and punchy medium weight plus flavors that are layered, pure and classy as the supporting tannins are really quite sophisticated. The personalities of the Taillepieds and Pézerolles are really quite similar in the sense of both being refined and high energy wines. (90-92)/2014+

2006 Pommard “Les Rugiens” 1er Cru / Shelf Price $249.00 / Pre-arrival Price $211.50
The barest touch of wood frames backward and very primary yet also very pure and hightoned red pinot fruit aromas that are distinctly cool in character while introducing delicious, intense and really quite serious flavors that possess fine dry extract levels that culminate in a firm and slightly edgy finish that belies just a subtle trace of bitterness that my score assumes will round out with time in bottle. (89-92)/2014+

2006 Nuits St. Georges “Aux Thorey” 1er Cru / Shelf Price $160.00 / Pre-arrival Price $136.00
(located at the southern end of the Vosne section of Nuits). An earthy and notably spicy dark berry fruit nose trimmed in discreet oak tones merges into rich and sappy flavors that are rich, full and nicely round on the concentrated mid-palate underpinned by dense but fine tannins with more obvious depth and length. (89-91)/2014+

2006 Corton-Pougets Grand Cru / Shelf Price $226.00 / Pre-arrival Price $192.00
A deft touch of wood frames equally elegant, airy and pure red berry fruit aromas though here there are more evident earth and game hints that also characterize the minerally, intense and dusty flavors that possess fine depth and length on the slightly chewy and only moderately ripe structural elements. To be clear, this is not under ripe but it would also be fair to say that there are other wines in the range where the tannins are riper. (89-91)/2014+

2006 Corton-Clos du Roi Grand Cru / Shelf Price $262.00 / Pre-arrival Price $222.50

A slightly riper and definitely more sauvage nose of mostly red berry fruit aromas nuanced by hints of earth, wood spice and a smoked game quality lead to very fresh, big and well-muscled flavors that possess excellent volume on the complex, long and impressively long finish. The structural elements have just a bit more ripeness to them and the depth here is certainly admirable. For the patient. (90-92)/2016+

2006 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru / Shelf Price $292.00 / Pre-arrival Price $248.50
(from a .29 ha parcel by the abandoned tower just west of the Château de LaTour). Here the wood is more obvious if not intrusive with an expressive nose of ripe and earthy red berry fruit that contains notes of both animale and underbrush hints that slide into intense, full, rich and textured mouth coating flavors that culminate in a chewy, long and youthfully austere finish that offers excellent length. (90-92)/2016+

2006 Vosne-Romanée “Les Malconsorts” 1er Cru / Shelf Price $369.00 / Pre-arrival Price $313.50
An extremely floral nose combines with ripe, spicy and very Vosne style seductive blue and black fruit that is trimmed in just a bit of oak influence that precedes rich, intense and serious medium fullbodied flavors that possess taut muscle and a firmly structured finish that will permit this to age well. Classy juice that is classic Malconsorts in character. (90-93)/2016+

2006 Vosne-Romanée “Les Malconsorts - Christiane” 1er Cru
/ Shelf Price $430.00 / Pre-arrival Price $365.50
Here the slightly more elegant nose is even more floral as well as slightly spicier as well but otherwise, really quite similar, leading to rich, full, sweet and beautifully detailed and texturally, the mouth feel is slightly rounder as the tannins appear to be more completely integrated at this early stage, which confers a greater sense of harmony and overall balance. Lovely juice with outstanding potential. (91-94)/2016+

BOUCHARD Pere et Fils
"Philippe Prost, Bouchard’s winemaker, notes the following: 'For me, 2006 is a very good vintage and in red, while stylistically resembling 2004 there is better underlying material and I think the ‘06s will please everyone as it produced lovely wines with excellent balance.' Prost went on to say that the '06s were bottled earlier than normal because they were taking up their wood quickly and thus the decision was made that there was no point in risking the wines drying out in barrel.' The quality of the Bouchard ‘06s is certainly very good to excellent and while they can’t match the stupendous 2005s, they are quality successors." (Burghound, April 2008)

2006 Monthelie “Champs Fulliot” 1er Cru / Shelf Price $79.00 / Pre-arrival Price $67.50
A distinctly cooler and more reserved nose of red berry fruits trimmed in subtle hints of wood and earth where the latter is also expressed by the more minerally, supple and detailed middle weight flavors that culminate in a dusty and mouth coating finish where the acidity is more prominent and the tannins are not quite as phenolically ripe. 87/2011+

2006 Beaune “Teurons” 1er Cru / Shelf Price $99.50 / Pre-arrival Price $84.50
A discreet soupçon of wood sets off an at once prettier yet more serious nose of layered and pure earthy pinot fruit that possesses fine aromatic depth and this depth continues onto the textured, intense and mouth coating medium-bodied flavors that are very Teurons in terms of their taut muscularity, all wrapped in a firm finish that is admirably persistent. There is very good underlying material and this could surprise to the upside. A classic Teurons. 89/2013+

2006 Volnay “Taillepieds” 1er Cru / Shelf Price $130.00 / Pre-arrival Price $110.50

A really lovely nose of ultra pure red pinot fruit that is at once cool and reserved yet somehow accessible that introduces intensely mineral-infused flavors that are equally pure, supple and driving, all wrapped in a finish that delivers great definition and length. A classic Volnay that is approachable yet holds plenty in reserve. 91/2014+

2006 Volnay “Clos des Chênes” 1er Cru / Shelf Price $130.00 / Pre-arrival Price $110.50
A slightly riper nose features a violet floral nose along with blue and red pinot fruit that precedes very rich and relatively powerful medium plus-bodied flavors that offer excellent volume and ample mouth coating sap and while the finish is not as precise, there is perhaps even better overall depth. A choice. 91/2014+

2006 Beaune “Grèves – Vigne de l’Enfant Jésus” 1er Cru / Shelf Price $243.00 / Pre-arrival Price $206.50
(from a 4 ha parcel). Interestingly, Prost elected to serve this last, which means after the Clos de Bèze and I must say that it did not suffer unduly despite coming after a string of grands crus. A complex, fresh and layered nose of red berry fruits, spice and earth merges gracefully into rich, full, sweet and intense red cherry-infused flavors that are vibrant and unusually powerful while wrapped in a focused, mouth coating and superbly well balanced finish brimming with dry extract. A wine that will age for a long time. 92/2014+

2006 Le Corton Grand Cru / Shelf Price $213.00 / Pre-arrival Price $181.00
A reserved and relatively cool nose of wild red berries, game, underbrush and crushed herbs introduces earthy, intense and impressively broad scaled and powerful flavors that are dense, balanced and vibrant and really stain the palate on the explosively long finish that is youthfully austere. A stunner that should age beautifully well. 93/2018+

2006 Echézeaux Grand Cru / Shelf Price $375.00 / Pre-arrival Price $319.00
(from a Domaine-owned parcel in En Orveaux). A relatively subtle touch of wood frames a highly spiced red berry fruit nose that displays nuances of earth and smoke that are in keeping with the rich, full, sweet and mouth coating flavors that are really quite supple, indeed even forward yet the finish is very firm and moderately austere. Like the best wines in this range, there is an impressive amount of dry extract that confers a textured quality to the backend. 93/2016+

2006 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru / Shelf Price $375.00 / Pre-arrival Price $319.00
(from Domaine-owned fruit in 2 similarly sized parcels – 1 at the top and the other at the bottom of the slope). Not surprisingly, there are more similarities than differences between these two versions of Clos de Vougeot [the other being a négociant wine] but the differences are significant, particularly in that the Domaine version is more complex and slightly finer with huge dry extract levels and a long, powerful and explosive finish. An impressive built-to-age wine that is clearly worth a serious look. 94/2018+

2006 Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru / Shelf Price $520.00 / Pre-arrival Price $442.00
(from purchased grapes that come from the same source as the Chapelle). A more elegant, less reserved and spicier nose of cool red berry fruit that has background nuances of Gevrey earth and underbrush notes that merge into rich, full and serious full-bodied flavors that are marvelously complex and brimming with dry extract that gives the finish a textured quality on the massively long finish. This is a ‘wow’ wine that is also old school in style. 95/2018+

2006 Chambertin Grand Cru / Shelf Price $520.00 / Pre-arrival Price $442.00
Prost noted that this was made with a 100% whole cluster fermentation. A cool, earthy and distinctly floral nose complements equally cool and reserved big-bodied flavors that are linear, direct, powerful and ooze minerality on the hugely long finish that displays plenty of sauvage influence. This is a classic old school Cham with impressive aging potential. (93-95)/2018+

2006 Bonnes Mares Grand Cru / Shelf Price $610.00 / Pre-arrival Price $519.00
(from a mix of terres rouges and terres blanches but with a bit more of the former). This is perhaps the most reserved wine in the range aromatically and it required aggressive swirling to coax even grudging aromas of red and blue pinot fruit with violet hints that precede ripe, pure and very serious broad-shouldered flavors that possess a beguiling texture and impressive mid-palate concentration that still does not completely buffer the firm, long and chewy finish. This is a big wine that will require plenty of cellar patience. 93/2018+

Zind-Humbrecht Sweet Wines, Alsace, served with Patés
Tuesday 8th July 5-7:30pm, In-store, $45pp
In 1988 Olivier Humbrecht became the first Frenchman to pass both parts of the notoriously difficult British Master of Wine examination, and this while writing in a foreign language. But while his intellect is astounding, it is his wines that serve to impress even more: Sweet, rich and voluptuous, mineral and fresh, alluring to the point of surrender. A winemaker of Olivier's stature can make most anything happen in the cellar, yet he chooses to step back and let his vineyards and raw materials do the work for him, thus resulting in terroir-true and beautifully characteristic Alsatian wines.
To show these amazing wines at their best we will be serving them with a selection of delicious patés; the fragrance, sweetness and firm acid thread of the wines will perfectly complement the richness and flavour of the paté... This tasting holds the promise of an unforgettable sensory experience.
