Wine of the Week

Top Heathcote Shiraz - La Pleiade Offer

New Tasting Schedule

Dear wine aficionado,

We have thoroughly enjoyed having Frédéric Coulon from Domaine de Beaurenard here, and tasting his Châteauneuf-du-Papes was, and always will be, a rare delight. The good news is that the tasting of great wine does not stop here, as we have a thrilling new line-up of tastings planned for the next few weeks: We will discover hidden gems from France's Southwest and the Languedoc, experience the phenomenal 2005 vintage in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, compare premium Aussie Shiraz to those from the rest of the world, and lose ourselves in the sedutive sweet wines of Zind-Humbrecht. Don't miss out!

To book for any of our tastings, or order wines on offer, please reply to this email, or alternatively download the order form now.

Wine of the Week

2005 Château de Dracy, Bourgogne Rouge
Shelf Price $33 / Offer Price $30 / Unit price per dozen $28

Who wouldn’t want to drink Burgundy every day? Our Wine of the Week is one of our old favourites, a delicious Pinot Noir from the stable of preeminent Burgundy giant, Albert Bichot.

This wine is a prime example of how well a generic appellation wine can perform in a great vintage: The nose is exuberant and fruity, with redcurrant, plum and sweet red cherry being complemented by soft, spicy earth. Harmonizing wafts of cinnamon and plum also present. A nicely rounded and flavourful palate ends in a suave finish.

Food match: The classic red Burgundy and roast duck combination remains a winner. However, this wine will equally complement a host of other dishes, e.g. game birds like pheasant and quail, chicken cooked with earthy, mushroomy flavours, and even fish dishes like seared tuna or salmon. With most salmon these days being farmed and consequently coarser in taste and fattier in texture, when seared it pairs well with slightly chilled Pinot Noir, the latter picking up perfectly on the richness of the fish and the caramelised crust.

Special Offer

2006 La Pleiade Shiraz, Heathcote
Shelf Price $75.00 / Special Offer Price $69.50

In the clear and unpolluted night skies of antiquity the Pleiades was an object of wonder and interest. It was the subject of myth and legend in almost every culture on the planet... The Pleiades star cluster is displayed in an fashionably understated way on the label of the bottle, but it is the liquid inside that takes one to (forgive us) celestial heights!

The tale begun when Rhône giant, Michel Chapoutier, and Jasper Hill's Ron Laughton got together, shared a few bottles of wine, talked about their passions for organic and bio-dynamical farming, and before long a new venture was born. In the spring of 1998 a vineyard using both Australian and French Shiraz clones was planted. Both Michel and Ron place great emphasis on the reflection of terroir in wine, and their non-inventionist approach speaks louder than words. This approach restricts them to any interference with the terroir, for example: the vineyard sees no irrigation, as that would change the natural balance in the soil. And it is in this very soil that Heathcote's secret lies: planted in this very, very deep, moisture-retaining, red Cambrian earth, the low-yielding vines produce tiny berries bursting with Shiraz-flavours.
When French and Australian expertise are combined, the result can be something magical, and in the case of these two highly talented men, it most certainly is. The wine has power and intensity, pure Shiraz-fruit and a wonderful underlying stony character. The 2005 vintage scored 94 points in Wine Advocate, and Robert Parker hailed a barrel sample of the 2006 as "even more remarkable"! Production is tiny - only about 500 cases is made of this briliant cuvée.

"...The fabulous 2006 vintage expresses the Cambrian soil regional trademark depth of colour, intensity of flavours and great complexity with perfect balance from our low yielding un-irrigated biodynamic vineyard. Even with an Australian and French touch, terroir prevails. Powerful and approachable now, with long cellaring potential if you have the patience." Ron Laughton

New Tastings

Quinta de la Rosa Port
Tonight 20th May 5 - 7:30pm, In-store, Free
The Douro valley in Portugal is the Home of Port, and here Quinta de la Rosa is one of the foremost players. We are proud to be associated with these wines, as their consistent quality and exceptional value for money speak for itself. Come and taste your way through some yummy Ports: Finest Reserve, 10yr old Tawny, Late Bottled Vintage and many more, and make use of the evening's discounts to stock up for winter. Think of a fireplace, and some cheese...

Languedoc Roussillon
Tuesday 27th May 5-7:30pm, In-store, Free
"Cheap rough wine may remain statistically significant in Languedoc-Roussillon, but the region's best growers have long since left that past behind. Their dark wines of stone and sun, new and strange, have a disconcerting Mediterranean beauty." (from 'The New France' by Andrew Jefford.) Over the last 20 years, regional production in the region has halved, yet AOC production has risen fivefold. Grapegrowers and winemakers moved to planting the propitious vineyard soils with well-adapted grape varieties, as well as practising fastidious viticulture and non-interventionist winemaking. The obvious result was a giant leap in wine quality. The wide range of grape varieties include Syrah, Carignan, and Grenache, and Roussane and Grenache Blanc for whites.

New Releases Tasting - Rhône and Izway
Tuesday 3rd June 5-7:30pm, In-store, Free
Our long-time customers will be no strangers to the Izway wines, but still, they deserve to be introduced again: Made in the Barossa by the talented Craig Isbel and Brian Conway (friends of Europa, we are happy to say), these wines are made with an old-world elegance, yet retaining their inherent "Aussie-ness". The duo is highly selective about the fruit that goes into their wine, and that, plus a hands-on approach in the cellar is what give these wines a special edge.
Also available for tasting will be some new-vintage releases of old favourites from the Rhône.

2005 Châteauneuf-du-Papes
Tuesday 10th June 5-7:30pm, In-store, $45pp
The buzz around the extraordinary 2005 vintage will continue for decades to come, and rightly so: These top Southern Rhône wines display so much elegance, power and balance that it is very hard not to get intensly excited about them. We will be showing 9 wines from some of Châteauneuf's foremost producers, including Pegau, Charvin, Vieux Telegraphe, Clos St Jean and Mont-Redon.

Southwest France
Tuesday 17th June 5-7:30pm, In-store, Free

Situated just below Bordeaux, France's Southwest is no longer a wine region tucked away in obscurity. The quality of wine (and value for money) emerging out of appellations like Cahors, Madiran and Juraçon affirm that these wines are worth a special search of the market place. Well, we have done the searching for you, all you have to do is come and taste it yourself!

Super-premium Shiraz
Tuesday 24th June 5-7:30pm, In-store, $35pp

We will compare top Aussie Shiraz (including Torbreck The Factor, La Pleiade and Clonakilla) to those of the Northern Rhône (Clape Cornas, Cuilleron St Joseph Les Serines, etc.). Also thrown into the mix will be a Shiraz from Italy's Fontodi and one of South Africa's very best examples, Boekenhoutskloof Syrah. Experiencing the effect of differences in terroir, climate, wine-making styles, etc. on a single grape variety is always fascinating - this one is certainly not to be missed!

Zind-Humbrecht Sweet Wines, Alsace, served with Patés
Tuesday 8th July 5-7:30pm, In-store, $45pp
In 1988 Olivier Humbrecht became the first Frenchman to pass both parts of the notoriously difficult British Master of Wine examination, and this while writing in a foreign language. But while his intellect is astounding, it is his wines that serve to impress even more: Sweet, rich and voluptuous, mineral and fresh, alluring to the point of surrender. A winemaker of Olivier's stature can make most anything happen in the cellar, yet he chooses to step back and let his vineyards and raw materials do the work for him, thus resulting in terroir-true and beautifully characteristic Alsatian wines.
To show these amazing wines at their best we will be serving them with a selection of delicious patés; the fragrance, sweetness and firm acid thread of the wines will perfectly complement the richness and flavour of the paté... This tasting holds the promise of an unforgettable sensory experience.
