New in Store - 2005 Bordeaux
Dear Wine aficionado,

Firstly this week we farewell Richard Aubry, who was with us only a relatively short time, but was a welcome Gallic touch to our Euro-centric store. Richard has taken up a position with the Australian arm of the Chapoutier empire, and we wish him well in this new chapter in his life. As one door closes, another opens, and so we welcome Evan Buckley to the team. Ev' comes well credential'ed and anyone who attended last weeks tasting will already have met the charming chap. In case you didn't why not come along to today's tasting (see below for details) and say hello. (Ev' is the tall one.)

This week we have a slew of interesting offers that should cater to most tastes. The ever popular Jasper Hill, from Heathcote, Trio infernal from Spain (via France), and Johanneshof from Marlborough.

Regards

The Europa Cellars team

Wine of the Week

2005 Domaine Gallety - Haute Vigne, Saint-Montant-Ardèche - France
Full Price $31.00 / Wine of the Week Price $27.00 / Dozen Unit Price $25.50

Alain Gallety produces some remarkable wines using organic farming and laissez- faire techniques not dis-similar to those of Jasper Hill (see below). As a result his wines are widely considered among the best of the Ardeche region of the Rhone Valley. Alain makes three cuvées, (the Domaine Gallety and the Syrare are the other two). The Haute vigne represents particularly good value as it is made from the fruit that Alain feels isn't quite ready for the Domaine wine.

Special Offers

Jasper Hill, Heathcote

The red wines of Jasper Hill are highly regarded and always much sought after. We have a very small allocation ( six bottles) of the 2007 Georgia’s Paddock and even less of the 2007 Emily's Paddock. These are great examples of the complexity and powerful grace that is possible out of Heathcote. These wines reflect the bio-dynamic principles applied in the vineyards and the policy of minimal intervention in the winery, allowing the true 'terroir' to fully express itself.

The vines are hand pruned and harvested and grow on natural rootstock (no grafting) in the deep, red, and well drained, gravelly loam soils. Yields are kept low (2-3 tonnes per hectare), and grapes are picked at optimal flavour ripeness regardless of sugar levels, ensuring a balanced tasting wine (regardless of alcohol content).

All fermentation is carried out by indigenous (native or wild) yeasts present on the grape skins. All pressings are returned for completeness of the wine.

The red wines are then racked off gross lees into small French and American oak barriques (20 percent new each year) for oak maturation of about 15 months with no racking or fining or filtration. Malolactic fermentation occurs naturally in the barrel without any inducement during late spring. After blending, they are given a coarse filtration just prior to bottling.

2007 Georgia’s Paddock Shiraz / Shelf Price $83.00 / Offer Price $74.70

2007 Emily’s Paddock Shiraz / Shelf Price $111.00 / Offer Price $99.90

Trio Infernal, Priorat - Spain

What do Laurent Combier (Domaine Combier-Crozes Hermitage), Peter Fischer (Chateau Revelette - Coteaux d'Aix en Provence) and Jean-Michel Gerin (of the Domaine J-M Gerin - Cote Rotie) have in common? Apart from being well established and respected Rhone valley producers, they also have a side-project in the heart of Catalan country - Priorat, Spain.

Trio infernal is the name given to this talented triumvirate by the local Spaniards, after observing their 'hellish' work routine. The winemakers make the 500km round trip from France to Priorat every 15 days, typically starting at 2am, they drive through the night, arrive at 8:30am, put in a day's graft, and then climb back into the car and drive home.

This punishing routine obviously has its own rewards, and the resulting wines have garnered copious and abundant acclaim. Trio infernal's 2004 No. 2/3 was awarded 'best Spanish wine of the year by El Mundo, in 2006.

2005 Trio infernal No.1/3 Garnacha/Carinena / Shelf Price $95.00 / Offer Price $83.00

No.1/3 is a blend of old vine Grenache (60%) and Carignan (40%). It is tank fermented and aged in a combination of new and old oak for 12 months. It is a vibrant wine with lots of red fruit on the palate. The acid is bright and the tannins are fine and ripe. This will benefit greatly from a few more years of cellaring, but is approachable enough now for those with little patience.

Johanneshof Cellars, Marlborough - New Zealand

Johanneshof was established in 1991 and is jointly owned and operated by Edel Everling a fifth generation winemaker from Ruedesheim, Rheingau, Germany and Warwick Foley from Marlborough. Both winemakers trained in the world-famous wine area of Rheingau in Germany. Here they discovered their love of the aromatic white varieties and brought this passion back to New Zealand.

Continuing a theme, Johanneshof are also very 'hands-off' in their approach to wine making. The vines are close cropped, low yielding and un-irrigated to maximise the fruit quality and flavour. The winery - while employing the best that modern technology can offer - is built on multiple levels so that the wines can be moved without pumping, to preserve the aromatics.

All of their wines have won a host of awards, notable among them, the Decanter World Wine Awards, where their 2004 Gewurztraminer won the ‘Regional New Zealand Aromatic White Wine Trophy’, and the ‘International Aromatic White Wine Trophy’. Bob Campbell MW, writing about the 2006 Gewurztraminer said, “ this might just be the best New Zealand Gewurztraminer ever made”. And the recently released 2007's look like continuing the upward trend. The other wines - unfairly -tend to get overshadowed by the Gewurztraminer, when each is a stunning example of what passionate winemakers can do with the potential inherent in each of the varieties that they care for from vine to glass.

2007 Sauvignon Blanc / Shelf Price $32.00/ Offer Price $28.80

Light Red's
Tonight 23 September 5-7:30pm, In-store, Free (No booking necessary)
Tonight's tasting is all about the lighter things in life, well the lighter reds in any case. With the warmer weather surely on the way, we are thinking about cellaring our Heathcote shiraz and turning towards less heavy brethren. Yummy things like, Beaujolais, Bourgogne Passetoutgrains - once a bit of everything, now a melange of gamay and (at least one third) pinot noir- a grignolino from Italy and a nebbiolo by Luke Lambert in Heathcote.
