Wine of the Week

2005 Domaine du Vieux Chêne Cuvée des Capucines, Côtes du Rhône
Shelf Price $21.50 / Offer Price $19.50 / Dozen Unit Price $18.25

“This grenache comes from a Côtes du Rhône vineyard that has been certified organic for a decade. It smells and tastes unmistakably of where it’s from: earthy aromas of squashed baked plum and sticks and leaves lead onto a lovely, spicy mouthful of medium-bodied red wine, with pretty, juicy red fruit and some powdery, fine-grained tannins. Exactly the kind of wine you want to discover being poured by the glass in some out-of-the-way bistro in Paris or Lyons.” Best Buy Wines, Gourmet Traveller Wine, June/July 2008 -

Domaine Jacques Puffeney, Jura

The Jura is an intriguing appellation. Situated in France's far east, between Burgundy and Switzerland, it has been remote and isolated enough to retain its own traditions, a few idiosyncratic local grape varieties and quite fascinating wine styles.

Jacques Puffeney's first vintage was at the age of 17 (while working at a cheese-maker to pay the bills), and from then he slowly started acquiring parcels of vineyard; today he owns 7.5 hectares in the Arbois appellation. Of these, 4.5ha represent white varieties Savagnin and Chardonnay, known locally as Naturé and Melon d'Arbois respectively. The rest is dedicated to reds: Poulsard, Trousseau and a little bit of Pinot Noir.
The wines of Jacques Puffeney are individualistic, captivating and display a beautiful purity of fruit. Why not try something a little different for a change? We expect you won't be disappointed.

2004 Cuvée Sacha / Shelf Price $42.00 / Offer Price $36.95
The Cuvée Sacha is an unconventional blend: Savagnin (aged with a flor-like yeast, see Vin Jaune below) is blended with Chardonnay (aged in the normal way). This wine, as all the other Puffeney wines, have not been fined or filtered. This is a highly focused wine: its delicate and delicious nutty character is complemented by a lively, garden-fresh palate.

2004 Chardonnay / Shelf Price $34.50 / Offer Price $29.95
Harvest usually starts in late September, and Jacques' Chardonnay is the first grape to be harvested. Fermentation takes places in stainless steel tanks, whereafter the wine is transferred to "foudres" (large wooden vats) for malolactic fermentation. The wine spends 18 to 24 months in the foundre before being bottled.

2005 Trousseau / Shelf Price $48.50 / Offer Price $42.50
Trousseau is of one of the two principal dark grape varieties indigenous to the Jura, and is more robust and deeply coloured than Poulsard. It buds late and therefore avoids devastation by most spring frosts but can be an irregular yielder. Puffeney's Trousseau undergoes a 3 week or longer cuvaison, and is then racked into foundres (all old oak) where malolactic fermetation takes place. It is aged for about 30 months in barrel.

1999 Vin Jaune (620ml) / Shelf Price $129.00 / Offer Price $113.00
Arguably the Jura's most famous wine, the Vin Jaune is anything but a run-of-the-mill sticky. Jacques does not make his Vin Jaune every year, but only in vintages where optimum "Indian summer" conditions allow the Savagnin grapes to reach exceptional ripeness. Following fermentation, the wine is stored in Burgundian barrels for more than 6 years. The barrels are filled to the brim, and after a period of time, evaporation reduces the volume of liquid and an air pocket is created at the top of the barrel. The reason why Vin Jaune is almost sherry-like is because, at this stage, the wine oxidizes and a film of yeast (not unlike the Jerez-flor) starts to grow on the surface. The wine is bottled in a signature clavelin wine bottle that holds 620ml.

Fritz Haag, Alsace

"But now 2006 seems to be putting everything else in the shade. Rarely have we tasted such a sensational collection on the Mosel. 13 wines with 90 or more points, eight of which are amongst the best the entire country has to offer – when did that last happen? For that, the award of “Collection of the year” goes without saying..." Armin Diel & Joel Payne, Gault Millau 2008

The “sensational collection” referred to above belongs to none other than Fritz Haag, winner of “Collection of the Year” from both wine publications Gault Millau and Wein Gourmet. Oliver Haag took over from his father, Wilhelm, in 2005 and is successfully continuing the family’s philosophy: the production of fine, fruity, delicate Mosel Rieslings of unmistakable character. The Fritz Haag vineyard looks back on a long history: it was first mentioned in records in 1605 when the village was still called Dusemond. The classified, top vineyard locations of Brauneberger Juffer and Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr lie on the left bank of the Mosel opposite the village, and in 1925, in order to even further promote the reputation of these world-famous sites, the Dusemond village was renamed Brauneberg.

The 10.5ha Juffer-Sonnenuhr vineyard lies on a steep, south-facing slope which forms a kind of concave depression in the hillside. The soil (sometimes deep, sometimes slate rocks) consist of pure, very fine and well-weathered Devonian slate, which can seem almost “greasy”. These factors contribute to the all-important absorption and retention of heat, and here the Riesling grape reaches its pinnacle: the wines are ripe and full-flavoured, with great minerality and unmistakable potential. Surrounding the central Juffer-Sonnenuhr, lies the Juffer vineyard, with heavier soils and less slate - though somewhat less complex, wine quality here remains very high.

Overall the Fritz Haag wines continue to impress (as they did the two gentlemen quoted earlier!). Possibly the most striking aspect of these wines is the authenticity with which they display their heritage and locality. Drinking these, it is easy to imagine standing next to the Mosel, staring at the soaring Brauneberger vineyards...

"A lovely kabinett, sleek and elegant, with lime, pineapple and mineral aromas and flavors. Vibrant and focused, with a long finish. Fine dimension and complexity. Drink now through 2020." 92 Points, Wine Spectator

2006 Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese / Shelf Price $96.00 / Offer Price $81.50
"Pale golden yellow. Discreet aromas of white peach, quince and mint, plus a hint of honeyed botrytis. Rich, juicy apricot fruit and understated acidity are in delicate balance. Creamy lemon curd and salty minerality mingle on the long finish." 91 points, Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, Jan/Feb 08

2006 Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Gold Capsule #9 375ml / Shelf Price $89.50 / Offer Price $76.00
"Golden yellow. Sumptuous aromas of peach skin, ripe apricot and clove waft over a firm bed of brown spice botrytis. The rich, dense passion fruit flavor is creamy and silky, enlivened by an ethereal minerality. This is fruit concentration with angel's wings and one of the ten best ausleses of the vintage, topped only by Haag's two rare auction wines." 95 points, Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, Jan/Feb 08

Wines from Campania, Italy
Tuesday 1st July 5-7:30pm, In-store, Free

The whole of Italy can be described as one boot-shaped vineyard, and the region of Campania lies around the city of Naples, in the south west, or, “just above the ankle”. The region boasts superb grape-growing conditions (abundant sunshine and hillside sites with volcanic soil) and has a wealth of local varieties: Aglianico, Fiano, Piedirosso and Greco, to name just a few. We have recently acquired a number of new release wines from Telaro, a high quality producer situated in the Gallucio AC. Telaro produces amazing wines from Falanghina, Fiano and Aglianico grapes; wines that really speak of their origin. We will be showing these as well as a some from other producers.

Zind-Humbrecht Sweet Wines, Alsace, served with Patés
Tuesday 8th July 5-7:30pm, In-store, $45pp
In 1988 Olivier Humbrecht became the first Frenchman to pass both parts of the notoriously difficult British Master of Wine examination, and this while writing in a foreign language. But while his intellect is astounding, it is his wines that serve to impress even more: Sweet, rich and voluptuous, mineral and fresh, alluring to the point of surrender. A winemaker of Olivier's stature can make most anything happen in the cellar, yet he chooses to step back and let his vineyards and raw materials do the work for him, thus resulting in terroir-true and beautifully characteristic Alsatian wines.
To show these amazing wines at their best we will be serving them with a selection of delicious patés; the fragrance, sweetness and firm acid thread of the wines will perfectly complement the richness and flavour of the paté... This tasting holds the promise of an unforgettable sensory experience.
