Dear wine aficionado,

Welcome to our new look e-newsletter. You will soon realise that it is almost exactly like our old newsletter, only with a little extra formatting and picture of the Cavallotto winery, as shot from the village of Castiglione Falletto Italy. Anyway, we are excited to introduce this new 'image' with an offer from our favourite Provençal winery, Domaine Tempier, their wines have been giving us joy since Europa opened it's doors and we urge you to stock up on them before we sell out (of the wine) altogether. Also, don't miss out on 25% off the beautifully pure 2006 Red Burgundies or another chance to grab some of the sought after 05's. So, read on or click this link to download our order form now.

Remember, we are always here should you have a question or need to find that elusive or special wine!

Wine of The Week

2006 Cazal Viel Viognier
Shelf Price $27.50 / Offer Price $25.00 / Whole Dozen unit price $23.00
Offer ends 6 May 08

A Mediterranean beauty...
From the South of France, arguably the country's most underrated wine growing area, comes this smart Viognier by "one of the most reliable and forward-looking [producers] in the Languedoc" (Jancis Robinson MW). Cazal Viel is situated in the beautifully hillly Coteau du Languedoc surrounding the small town of St Chinian. The combination of old vines (some of the oldest in the region) and poor, stony soils impart an attractive finesse and depth to the wine, which adds to the Viognier's luscious honeysuckle, perfumed peach & apricot and floral characters. A baby-Condrieu at a fraction of the price?

Food match: Creamy/buttery pasta, crab, a pear, walnut & blue cheese combo, or your favourite Chinese/Thai takeaway!

DOMAINE TEMPIER
Pre-Arrival offer - 2004 & 2005 Reds, plus our favourite Rosé!
Offer ends once the wines arrive in-store or until stocks last

These wines are scheduled to arrive June/July

Bandol AOC terroir lies between Marseilles and Toulon on the hillside of a natural amphitheatre and runs down to the shore of the Mediterranean sea. The silicon and limestone soils and warm, coastal climate is ideally suited for the late ripening Mourvedre grape, which in these conditions reaches beautiful phenolic ripeness like nowhere else in the world.

"Domaine Tempier is a place in Provence, a home with its winery and vineyards, its olive trees and cypresses. It is home to a large joyful Provencal family. It is a wine. And while it must be inadvertent, one of those fortuitous miracles that embellish existence (there is no recipe for it dispensed at wine school), there is a certain vital spirit that one imbibes with each gorgeous swallow of Domaine Tempier's wine." (Kermit Lynch, Wine Importer, USA)

We wholly agree with what Kermit Lynch so eloquently states: It is beyond any doubt that Domaine Tempier is in a class of its own. Along with its extremely popular Rosé come superb terroir-driven reds, all showing different characteristics from their respective sites. The two most celebrated vineyards are La Tourtine and La Migoua, both planted mainly with Mourvedre and also smaller parcels of Cinsault and Grenache. The Migoua vineyard is a 6.5ha site in Le Beausset-Vieux, a horse-shoe shaped terroir at an altitude of 270 meters. La Tourtine is a 7ha site on top of the hillside, close to the Le Castellet village. From this vineyard comes two cuvées, named La Tourtine and Cabassaou.

Domaine Tempier Blanc 2007 / Shelf Price $64.00 / Pre-Arrival Price $51.00

Domaine Tempier Rosé 2007 / S-P $57.00 / PA-Price $45.00
Domaine Tempier Rosé 2007 MAGNUM
/
S-P $120.00 / PA-Price $96.00
In the realm of Rosé, Domaine Tempier is often said to be one of the elites.
A much sought-after wine, and every year it flies out of the shop before we can say strawberries and roses! This attractive blend of Mourvedre, Grenache and Cinsault is made by the “saignee” method, with just a short period of skin-contact. It is a delicate pale pink, lighter than most roses and delightfully Old World in style.

Domaine Tempier Cuvee Classique 2004 / S-P $66.00 / PA-Price $53.00
“The nose has more vitality than the 2005 and blossoms from the glass with raspberry, cranberry, pomegranate and a slight gaminess. The palate is full-bodied, concentrated, and quite tannic with the sous bois character dominating the finish. Moderate length, with cherry and wild strawberry lingering on the aftertaste. Despite the tannic structure, this is surprisingly approachable though I would cellar it for a few years.” 90pts Wine Advocate

Domaine Tempier Migoua 2004 / S-P $96.00 / PA-Price $77.00
“An intense, mineral-laden red, with concentrated layers of dark plum, raspberry, smoke and spice flavors. Chiseled and powerful, with fine-grained tannins and a luxurious cream- and cocoa-filled finish. Drink now through 2020.” 95pts Wine Spectator

“This is actually quite similar to the 2005: typically dominated by oak on the nose, perhaps with a little more vanilla pod. The palate is full-bodied, very concentrated with immense purity, but ferociously primal and backward. It will need some considerable cellaring, but certainly the length on the finish suggests a great wine.” 92pts Wine Advocate

Domaine Tempier Migoua 2005 / S-P $102.00 / PA-Price $81.00
50% Mouvèdre, 30% Grenache, 15% Cinsault & 5% Syrah.
“The smallest production of Tempier’s cuvees, this has an opulent nose, very ripe with more obvious scents of oak. Similarly the palate is very concentrated but just lacking a little character and again, just a little over-oaked. A delicious wine, quite gamey, but not as enchanting as the Tourtine.“ 91pts Wine Advocate

Domaine Tempier Tourtine 2004 / S-P $96.00 / PA-Price $77.00
75% Mouvèdre, 25% Grenache & Cinsault
“Shows a decadent meaty aroma, with rich, ripe flavors of dark plum, mineral, i garrigue n and hints of smoke. All wound up, with an intense finish of raspberry, black pepper and cocoa powder, followed by notes of iron and stone. Powerful. Drink now through 2020.” 93pts Wine Spectator

“This is a beautiful Bandol from Tempier with another bewitching nose of blackberry, boysenberry, leather and a touch of tar. The palate is full bodied, well defined with exquisite balance and purity. Like the 2005, there is a minerality here that lends the wine character. Touch of bitter cherry lingers on the after taste. Very long and persistent. Cellaring essential for this stupendous wine.” 94pts Wine Advocate

Domaine Tempier Tourtine 2005 / S-P $102.00 / PA-Price $81.00
“Although the Migoua commands a higher price, in my opinion it is the Tourtine that represents Tempier’s best cuvee. A wonderful, ebullient nose of blackberry, cherry, hedgerow and an almost savoury character. The palate has sublime balance and greater minerality than other cuvees; vigorous, utterly harmonious with a well-defined, wonderful poised finish. Outstanding.” 93pts Wine Advocate

Domaine Tempier Cabassoua 2005 / S-P $155.00 / PA-Price $124.00
“Cabassoua” translates as “escarpment” and is produced from a 1 hectare plot of Mourvèdre vines on the lower, steeper part of the La Tourrine vineyard. It is sheltered by a hill from the Mistral wine, and instead gets a light breeze that goes up along the narrow terraced slope. The slope faces south-south-west, which ensures maximum sun exposure. A very low yield results in a rare wine.

“This already has a little more lift on the nose than the regular Cuvee Classique, especially the leather and forest floor component. The palate is full-bodied, very intense and with good concentration. Harmonious, smooth in texture with a plump finish of blackberry, cranberry and leather. Good length. Excellent.” 92pts Wine Advocate

2006 ALBERT BICHOT & LUPE-CHOLET RED BURGUNDIES
Pre-Arrival offer - Featuring Domaine du Château Gris, Domaine du Pavillon & Domaine du Clos Frantin.
Offer ends once the wines arrive in-store or until stocks last

“Albéric Bichot noted that production was about 15% less than a normal year in 2006, adding that ‘we had more sorting work in the Côte de Beaune than in the Côte de Nuits. We did a relatively long but soft vinification that lasted about 21 days, give or take a few. We destemmed 100% as well’.” (Burghound Issue 30).

These wines are scheduled to arrive September/October ‘08

Bourgogne Pinot Noir Château de Dracy 2006 / Shelf Price $32.00 / Pre-Arrival Price $24.00
Vinification according to the traditional Burgundian methods consists of fermentation in open wooden vats with twice daily treading down. Maturation takes place partly in 225L oak casks for mellowness, and partly in vats to preserve fruit. Lovely fresh fruit typical of Pinot Noir: Black and red cherries, damson, blackcurrant and iris. The palate is fleshy and voluminous, yet nicely lively with a good balanced body of tender tannins.

Bourgogne Clos de Lupé Dom du Château Gris 2006 / S-P $38.00 / PA-P $28.50
The nose shows delicate aromas of cherry, currant and prune, complemented by whiffs of green tea and ivy. The flavour continues on a rounded and well-constructed palate; discreet oaking, fine tannins and a good, lively acid component adds to a balanced and beautiful finish.

Meursault Dom du Pavillon 2006 / S-P $78.00 / PA-P $58.50
(From vineyards bordering Volnay) Bright ruby-red colour. Delicate and subtle red fruits mingles with perfumed wild strawberry and peony. The front and mid-palates are abound with red berry fruit, and is followed by a sleek minerality. Silky tannins and wonderful balance - this wine possesses great finesse.

Beaune ‘Les Epenottes’ Dom du Pavillon 2006 / S-P $69.00 / PA-P $51.75
This premier cru displays a beautiful soft rendition of pure pinot fruit. The nose shows refined notes of black berries, sweet spices and white pepper. The palate is well-structured and offers a good if not truly special depth on the generous and nicely long finish. Very rewarding indeed.

Savigny-les-Beaune ‘Les Picotins’ Dom du Ch. Gris 2006 / S-P $62.00 / PA-P $46.50
Deep garnet-red colour. A fresh and vibrant nose features sweet and bitter cherry, violets and sweet strawberry. Discreet, slightly savoury, touches of Savigny earth adds complexity to the medium-bodied palate. Finishes firmly and lingers in the mouth. Exceptional value here.

Gevrey Chambertin ‘Clos Prieur’ Lupé-Cholet 2006 / S-P $102.00 / PA-P $76.50
From a well situated lieu-dit that lies in an ideal mid-slope location, just below the grand cru of Mazis-Chambertin. This wine shows delicious black berries, black pepper and some earthy notes. Good concentration of flavour on the palate is underlined by well-intergrated oak. The finish is long and pleasing.

Gevrey Chambertin ‘Les Murots’ Dom du Clos Frantin 2006 / S-P $104.00 / PA-P $78.00
From grapes grown on clay-rich, limey soil. A high proportion of erosive gravel on the surface ensures the ground remains well drained. This lightness of surface soil gives the "Les Murots" a wide flavour-profile of small red fruit and mineral aromas. On the nose suave mineral berry fruit is framed by subtle hints of soft woodspice. Very Gevrey in character, with a rich and firm body."A relatively expressive red berry fruit nose nuanced by hints of earth and underbrush leads to supple, forward and round flavors that culminate in a rich, punchy and vibrant finish. This is moderately firm and should offer 5 to 7 years of upside improvement."   (86-88)/2011+ Burghound

Vosne Romanee Dom du Clos Frantin 2006 / S-P $122.00 / PA-P $91.50
Luscious blackberries and violets. A sleek, stylish medium-bodied wine with a fine, silky texture - very typical of this village. "An interesting nose of spice, crushed herb and dark berry fruit aromas complements the rich, full and seductive flavors that are very Vosne in character, all wrapped in a relatively supple and fresh finish.."  (86-88)/2012+ Burghound

Volnay 1er Cru ‘Les Santenots’ Dom du Pavillon 2006 / S-P $104.00 / PA-P $78.00
"The very best wines of the Côte de Beaune [in 2006] come from Volnay and Pommard, with honorable mentions going to Savigny..." (Burghound Issue 30, second quarter 2008) "A pure extract of red pinot fruit nose introduces round, rich and serious flavors that possess lovely texture on the mouth coating finish where there is a slight hint of bitterness that will probably round out. Not surprisingly, the tannins are much finer here than in the prior wine." (88-91)/2012+ (Burghound)

Pommard ‘Clos Micault’ 1er Cru Lupé-Cholet 2006 / S-P $116.00 / PA-P $87.00
Situated in the South of the village of Pommard, Côte de Beaune. Brown calcic soils on limestone rubble, at the top of an ancient dejection cone of the river Vandaine, thus very strong. Exposed East-South-East. Always one of our most consistant wines regardless of vintage. Rich and powerfull, without any of the hard edges some times attributed to Pommard.

Pommard 1er Cru ‘Rugiens’ Dom Pavillon 2006 / S-P $160.00 / PA-P $120.00
"
(from Rugiens Bas). An expressive mix of red berries, plum and violet aromas are set off
against a discreet touch of wood influence that marries into rich, full and serious flavors brimming with evident minerality on the pure, balanced, firm and impressively long finish. This is a lovely effort and classic Rugiens. (89-91)/2014+" Burghound

Beaune ‘Les Bressandes’ 1er Cru Dom du Chateau Gris 2006 / S-P $92.00 / PA-P $69.00
Brilliant bright red. Elegant nose of black plum, red pinot fruit, sweet spices and ginger. The palate continues to impress with distinctive medium-weight flavours, plenty of character and a balanced, long and serious finish. Terrific quality; will amply reward a few years of cellaring.

Aloxe-Corton ‘Les Fourniers’ 1er Cru Dom du Ch Gris 2006 / S-P $106.00 / PA-P $79.50
Intense bouquet of ripe black cherry, strawberry and spicy floral elements, with intriguing hints of earth in the background. The round fleshy palate fills out nicely and develops to a pure and centered finish.

Aloxe-Corton ‘Clos des Marechaudes’ 1er Cru Dom Pavillon 2006 / S-P: $108.00 / PA-P $81.00
Situated on the territory of Aloxe-Corton, on the border with Ladoix in the Côte de Beaune. Brown-red calcareous soils on hard limestone and erosive rubble, exposed East South East on a steep incline. A complex and powerfull wine which will develop over time.

Nuits Saint Georges ‘Ch Gris’ 1er Cru Dom du Ch Gris 2006 / S-P $153.00 / PA-P $114.75
From vineyards with an average age of 40 years, situated alongside the celebrated grand cru La Tache. Splendid bright red colour. The spicy-rich bouquet reveals fallen leaves, Indian tea and mixed berry compote, accompanied by the faintest hint of vanilla. The vibrant and rather powerful palate shows excellent weight and refinement, and finishes rich and rewarding. "A notably cool and airy set of red berry fruit aromas imbued with a prominent minerality that leads to dusty and equally intense middle weight flavors that possess excellent definition and fine persistence if limited depth. Still, there is good balance and an overall sense of harmony with good freshness and punch." 87-89/2013+ Burghound

Vosne-Romanee ‘Les Malconsorts’ 1er Cru Clos Frantin 2006 / S-P: $234.00 / PA-P $175.50
Typical spicy black pinot fruit, earth and underbrush is complemented by subtle nutty oak. Intensely flavoured and robust palate is accentuated by a fresh acidity. Bright, penetrating and built to last. "(from a whopping 1.76 ha parcel). A notably ripe blend of red and black fruits plus subtle violet and rose petal nuances that can also be found on the rich, supple and muscled medium-bodied flavors that are solidly concentrated, textured and forward, all wrapped in a long and mouth coating finish. This is really quite a serious effort that offers excellent complexity." (89-91)/2014+ Burghound

Corton Grand Cru ‘Les Marechaudes’ Dom du Pavillon 2006 / S-P $182.00 / PA-P $136.50
“(a 2 ha monopole that is split between .5 ha classified as grand cru and the remaining portion as 1er). Here the wood is not subtle and at least at present fights for center stage with the ripe, earthy and slightly animale nose of red and dark pinot fruit that complements the round, rich, and supple flavors that possess good phenolic ripeness and solid finishing depth though not the class of the Rugiens. Still, this is quite pretty yet serious.’ (88-91)/2014+ (Burghound)

“Monopole. Good grip combined with depth of spicy dark fruit. Cool, smooth-grained and finishes with fruit, not dry tannins. Rounded, nicely crafted.” (JH, Jancis Robinson)

Corton Grand Cru Lupé Cholet 2006 / S-P $163.00 / PA-P $122.25
Broody and intense in its youth, yet revealing complex exotic red fruit, sweet spice and mixed peel. A stunning palate of great finesse and concentration. Will a few years to develop and open up.

Latricières Chambertin Grand Cru Lupé-Cholet 2006 / S-P $220.00 / PA-P $165.00
”Tricière” means “poor ground” and the limestone, marl and thin siliceous topsoil layer of this Grand Cru indeed do justice to its name. This saoil composition gives wines with complex flavour profiles and intriguing austerity. This wine shows delicate floral aromas such as rose and iris, on an elegant and extremely well-balanced body.

Chambertin Grand Cru Lupé-Cholet 2006 / S-P 374.00 / PA-P $280.50
The soil of this Grand Cru consist of brown and calcareous topsoil on hard Bajocian limestone. In the upper part of Chambertin, where this wine originates from, the soil contains more marl. This causes the vegetation cycle to slow down, and ultimately gives Chambertin wines its rare and regal balance. This wine is thoroughbred and complex, and sensual wafts of China tea, date and rosemary rises from the glass. Big and powerful body, while at the same time retaining its elegance and balance.

Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru Lupé-Cholet 2006 / S-P $302.00 / PA-P $226.50
The large, historic, walled Clos de Vougeot is one of Burgundy’s most famous vineyards.
Black tea, spices, crushed stone and meaty characters on the nose. The elegantly flavoured palate houses a firm structure backed up by fine oak. True to its cru, this is a powerful wine with the capacity to age for many years.

Echezeaux Grand Cru Dom du Clos Frantin 2006 / S-P 322.00 / PA-P $241.50
An expressive nose of myrtle, sloe, warm earth and spice is highlighted by a stony minerality, and a gentle touch of wood. Rich, mouthcoating texture and firm structure. Delicious finish that lingers on."(from .99 ha parcel in Champs Traversin). A pungent if slightly reduced nose combines a range of Asian spices with red and blue fruit plus floral nuances that merge into a very supple, indeed almost an easy mid-palate though the impressively long finish firms up considerably yet it is also slightly dry. We’ll see how this evolves." (87-90)/2013+ Burghound

Grands Echezeaux Grand Cru Lupé-Cholet 2006 / S-P $472.00 / PA-P $354.00
Beautiful bright garnet-red. An inviting nose of plumskin, red pepper, juniper berries and ginger create an anticipation for what’s to follow, and it does not disappoint! A velvety texture, lush flavours, fine tannins and a vibrant freshness. Serious complexity on an expressive, well-built palate leads to a generous and rewarding finish.

Richebourg Grand Cru Dom du Clos Frantin 2006 / S-P 974.00 tba / PA-P 730.50
"From a 0.07ha parcel situated in Les Veroilles. A sexy and highly perfumed nose of tea, violets, morel mushroom and clove lead to sweet, silky and focused flavours on a rich and fat mid-palate. Excellent balance, a result of the solid phenolic ripeness achieved on this unique parcel of land, and wonderful texture run through to the lingering finish. A wine to stun the senses! blackberry, cranberry and leather. Good length. Excellent.” 92p Wine Advocate
