| Dear wine aficionado, Whilst we shouldn't brag, last Tuesday we had the pleasure of opening up 12 Rieslings dating back to 1973. All the wines where from the Alsatian Grand Cru 'Kirchberg de Ribeauville' and all from producer Louis Sipp. In a word it was ' fascinating', an example of the longevity and scope a variety like Riesling really has. The 73 was certainly the biggest (but not the only) highlight of the night. The 85 was drinking wonderfully, whilst the equally stunning 83 still has many years ahead of it. Unfortunately none of the afore mentioned wines we have for sale, however, we do have good quantities of the 2001 & 1996. These two wines certainly have the pedigree and class to reward for some decades to come! This week 2005 Pegau, Charvin and Villeneuve Chateauneuf's and an invitation to our Big Autumn tasting. You may order or book your place by replying to this email, or alternatively download the order form now. | 2004 Chateau de Chambert "Le Causse" Shelf Price $18.00 / Offer Price $16.20 / Whole Dozen unit price $15.30 To compliment this week’s in-store tasting of Argentine Malbecs, our Wine-of-the-Week comes from Malbec's historical home: The Cahors appellation in France. Situated on a plateau about 180km inland from Bordeaux, the Malbec vineyards (with little parcels of Merlot and Tannat) receive full sun and light all day long, and also benefit from the warm southerly “Vent d’Autan” that blows especially in September. At Chateau de Chambert, winemaker Vincent Neuville is assisted by the reknowned, Stéphane Derenoncourt, consultant for some of Bordeaux’s most illustrious properties, including Château Pavie-Macquin, Château Canon-la-Gaffelière, Clos Fourtet and La Mondotte. Year round, Chambert, Stéphane and the team are fully dedicated to the same goal: produce the best Malbec expression ever. The “Le Causse” cuvee is made from 71% Malbec, 20% Merlot and 9% Tannat. Gorgeous raspberry and strawberry aromas mingle with cinnamon on the nose. The palate provides ample blackcurrant and dark spice, complemented by a supple texture and well-balanced structure. This could easily be mistaken for a good Bordeaux, yet it has the gentleness, suppleness and sunny quality of this warm region. Order Form |

| NEW 2005 CHATEAUNEUF-DU-PAPES Featuring Domaine Pegau, Domaine Charvin and Domaine Villeneuve These three producers represent some of the best and purest Châteauneuf-du-Pape has to offer and Europa Cellars is proud to be associated with them. Known for its sheer sensuality of flavour and powerful structure, this popular appellation delivers some of the world’s most desirable wines. As most elsewhere in France, 2005 was a phenomenal vintage for the Rhone, and these Châteauneufs show unequalled richness, power and balance. 2005 Domaine Pegau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee Reserve / Shelf Price $145.00 / Offer Price $130.50 “ These are some of my favorite wines in the world, and also some of my favorite visits, largely because of the charismatic Feraud family, from the daughter Laurence to the father Paul.” Robert Parker With Laurence Feraud at the helm, Domaine Pegau today remains one of the most talked about and sought after estates in the Southern Rhone, despite of, or more likely, because of, its distinctive traditional style. Laurence crafts extraordinary wines of from grapes grown on 11 different plots totalling 17 hectares scattered throughout Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Of the above, 70% are planted with Grenache, 15% with Syrah, 10% with Mourvèdre and the complement with a mixture of the rest of the 13 grape varieties allowed. After tasting this wine it is very hard to disagree with Parker: “Life is too short not to drink abundant quantities of Pegau.” “The 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Reservee, which I tasted in three separate components all scoring between 92 and 95 points, is a tannic, backward style for Domaine de Pegau with saturated color, huge tannins, high acidity, and powerful, muscular, full-bodied flavors. The wine has all the essence of Provence from its meatiness, aromas of roasted herbes de Provence, and sweet licorice, blackberry, and kirsch liqueur notes, but it is formidably tannic, dense, as well as fresh and lively. This wine will no doubt need 4-8 years of bottle age and should be uncommonly long-lived, lasting for at least two or more decades.” 92-95pts Wine Advocate 2005 Domaine Gerard Charvin Châteauneuf du Pape / Shelf Price $110.00 / Offer Price $99.00 From 50-year-old vineyards situated in the very northern corner of the appellation comes this absolutely sublime Châteauneuf, showing so much elegance and finesse that Robert Parker calls it “the Richebourg of Châteauneuf du Pape”! The very talented and unassuming young Laurent Charvin produces only two wines (a Côtes du Rhone being the other) at his small estate; both possessing unadulterated expressions of their terroir. Laurent has a no-frills/minimalist approach and allows the natural very low yields of the old vines to mold the wine’s complexity and suppleness. "Ruby-red. Intense red berry aromas, with complicating notes of orange peel and potpourri. Suave and silky on the palate, with red fruit flavors taking on a lavender aspect with air. The very long and wonderfully sweet finish features fine-grained tannins and a persistent raspberry note." 93-96pts Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar 2005 Domaine de Villeneuve Châteauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes / Shelf Price $90.00 / Offer Price $81.00 Domaine de Villeneuve is relatively new on the scene, having bought a very old, 8.4ha plot of already planted land in 1993. The property is situated in the north-eastern part of the appellation next to the famous Château Beaucastel. The domaine produces only one wine, the Vieilles Vignes - a very apt name since 90% of the vines are between 30 and 100 years old. Villeneuve is strictly bio-dynamical and puts great emphasis on the natural ability of the vine to defend itself against viruses or diseases. In the cellar great care is taken to avoid harsh treatments like pumping, and maturation takes place in a combination of tank and 600l wooden vats. The result of their efforts is a stunning wine (see rating below) roughly made up of 70% Grenache, 16% Mourvèdre, 8% Syrah, 4% Cinsault and 2% Clairette. “Surprisingly for this tannic, structured vintage, the 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes comes across as charming, with moderate but sweet tannin, good acidity, and plenty of sexy black currant and cherry fruit intermixed with hints of roasted herbs, loamy soil, and pepper. Ripe, medium to full-bodied, and more structured than the 2006, it should be at its finest between 2009 and 2020.” 91pts Wine Acvocate “ Order Form |
