| Wine of the Week Racemi, Apulia, FFC Presents, Greenock Creek, Clos Saint Jean, CNDP Tastings New in Store |
|||
| Dear Wine aficionado, This week we look at Zinfandel and Primitivo from a collective of grower/producers called Racemi, from Apulia (Puglia) in Italy, and revisit some of the best of the recent (current) offers. FFC Presents The Zinfandels appear to be the early birds' pick, but lets not forget the that there is more to California than Zin'. These wines have already earned their stripes internationally and will certainly be well received here in Australia. There is still time to secure early bragging rights, or just get some great examples of Californian wines at the best possible prices. Clos Saint Jean, CNDP Despite the early interest in these wines we still have some stock of Domiane 'Clos Saint Jean Chateauneuf, and surprisingly, there are one or two of the 'La Combe des Fous' and 'Deus ex Machina'. These wines are very competitively priced and won't last long. Greenock Creek We have been lucky enough to secure an extra dozen of each of the Alice's and the Apricot Block shiraz. There are a still a few bottles of the other wines remaining, so please call us if you are interested in obtaining any of these. Today's tasting : Spring Sparkling With Spring upon us (who says so?) and warmer weather soon to follow (?), we are turning our attention to a little spring-cleaning and renovation here at Europa. Others are thinking equine thoughts, some about fashion, and still others will wonder what to have with lunch. To help clear your head for such truly important questions we are having a little Spring Sparkling tasting today. This is a warm up for our Champagne steeping a little later in the year. See below for details of our upcoming tastings. order form Regards The Europa Cellars team David, Boon, Brian, Richard and Sam View this newsletter on-line NB All Prices are in Australian Dollars |

| Racemi, Apulia, Italy (Available now) Primitivo and Zinfandel So much has been written about these two grapes, or one grape with two names, that we do not intend to add to the debate here. Suffice to say that Zinfandel can produce some big and rich, powerful wines that can be quite heady and lend themselves well to assured oak treatment. And so can Primitivo. Both can produce elegant and structured wines also. As always it comes down to the producers' skill in polishing the rough hewn gems. Racemi is a collaboration of individual growers which aims to recognise and develop the status of the native vineyards of the region of Puglia. The principal grape is Primitivo di Manduria but include other rarer varieties such as Negroamaro, Ottavianello, Malvasia Nera, and Sussumaniello. It started over 30 years ago, when Francis and Eleanor Coppola and their kids were living in San Francisco. Being from a winemaking background (Francis' grandfather, Agostino Coppola, made wine in the basement of his apartment building in New York City) the Coppolas were eager to find a small cottage in Napa Valley as a weekend retreat where they could make a little homemade wine. The family cottage they so desired turned out to be the great Niebaum Mansion on the famed Inglenook Estate. Suddenly, the prospect of restoring that legendary property sounded more exciting than making a little bit of wine in the basement. This restoration turned into a 30-year endeavour. In 2006, the building of a new winery in Sonoma at long last gave a home to the ever-popular Diamond Collection and Rosso & Bianco brands. The Coppolas' aim was and still is to create quality wines that reflect the gracious style of everyday living, to be shared and enjoyed by their family and friends, as well as, today, all over the world. Corey Beck, born and raised in Sonoma County, is the talented and innovative winemaker of the Coppola wines. Francis Ford Coppola Presents, Rosso & Bianco Francis Coppola grew up with wine on the family table because his grandfather and uncles made homemade wine in the basement of their New York apartment using grapes that had been shipped by train from California. The Francis Ford Coppola Presents Rosso & Bianco range was created as a tribute to these family traditions, and to produce affordable, yet highly pleasurable wines to match their philosophy of wine as an integral part of everyday life. “One of my favorite projects this last year has been creating the new image of Rosso & Bianco wines and planning the renovation of our new Sonoma County winery. Rosso & Bianco are, by the way, my Uncle Kiki’s (opera composer and conductor Anton Coppola) favorite everyday wine. I wanted to give these wines a permanent home, and so I have bestowed on my new facility in Sonoma the name, Francis Ford Coppola Presents, Rosso & Bianco Winery!” Francis Ford Coppola 2007 FFC Presents Bianco Pinot Grigio, California / Shelf Price $24.00 / Pre-arrival Price $19.20 A blend of 89% Pinot Grigio, 6% Sauvignon Blanc and 5% Chardonnay, sourced from two different California appellations: Pinnacles Bench in Monterey, a cool climate region with coastal influences; and Clarksburg, an area near Lodi, which extreme warm daytime weather is offset by cool afternoon breezes from the delta. The wine as a lovely pale citron colour. Vibrant and zesty, with intense floral aromas that mingle with cool melon and tropical fruit, and a light crisp mouthfeel, which is complemented by fresh peach, ripe pear, and pink grapefruit flavours. 2006 FFC Presents Rosso Classic, California / Shelf Price $24.00 /Pre-arrival Price $19.20 A blend of 48% Zinfandel, 27% Syrah and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from Lodi and Paso Robles wine regions. This wines shows lovely rich and juicy layers of sweet dark fruits, boysenberry pie, cloves, a touch of vanilla and mildy toasted oak. It has a supple texture, soft and round tannins, and nice weight. Perfect for everyday drinking. Sofia With movies like The Virgin Suicides, Lost in Translation and Marie Antoinette on her repertoire, Sofia Coppola has certainly received a fair share of her father's talent. The family ties between the Coppolas are strong, and this Sofia range began as a gift from father to daughter. 2007 Sofia Blanc de Blanc(sparkling),Monterey County/ Shelf Price $40.00 / Pre-arrival Price$32.00 82% Pinot Blanc, 10% Sauvignon Blanc, 8% Muscat, from Monterey County fruit. The 2007 Sofia Blanc de Blancs exudes fresh aromas of apple, peach & apricot, and tropical fruit, mixed with a perfumed lemony fragrance. Vibrant and crisp, displaying bright flavours on the palate and seductive notes of honeysuckle (from the Muscat) on the finish. Diamond Collection A definite step-up in quality and complexity from the previous ranges, yet remaining well-priced, the Diamond Collection wines are made from fruit sourced from various sites in California. The aim is to produce high quality wines displaying pure varietal expressions. 2007 Diamond Collection Sauvignon Blanc, California / Shelf Price $32.00/ Pre-arrival Price $25.60 Grapes were sourced from 3 different locations (Napa Valley, Alexander Valley and Mendocino County) giving the wine great complexity and stunning Sauvignon blanc aromatics. The 2007 has a pale straw colour. A nose of luscious pink grapefruit, tropical fruit, and fig leads to a fresh and vibrant palate. Summer melon, lemongrass, and a hint of gooseberry lingers on the finish. 2007 Diamond Collection Chardonnay,Monterey County/ Shelf Price $32.00 / Pre-arrival Price $25.60 Whole-cluster pressing and a combination of barrel and stainless steel fermentation. Bright golden yellow colous. Juicy apple, guava and melon aromas abound on the nose, and the palate follows with apple, cantaloupe, pear and crème brulée. A creamy and smooth texture is beautifully balanced by the fresh acidity, charateristic of cool-climate Monterey fruit. 2006 Diamond Collection Zinfandel, California / Shelf Price $34.00 / Pre-arrival Price $27.20 Sourced from old vines in Amador County (located in the Sierra Nevada Foothills about 45 miles southeast of Sacramento), and cooler vineyard sites in Paso Robles and Sonoma. 5% Petite Sirah is blended in to contribute to the tannin and structure, while balancing out Zinfandel's inherent 'jammy' nature. The wine has a beautiful dark fuchsia colour. Perfumed nose of briary blackberry, strawberry, toasted vanilla and sweet spices is followed by a generous palate showing strawberry jam, cassis and juicy plums. Great complexity and balance. 2006 Diamond Collection Merlot, California / Shelf Price $38.00 / Pre-arrival Price $30.40 The 2006 growing season was long and cool, allowing the grapes to hang on the vine and mature longer. As a result, this Merlot delivers exceptional concentration and impressive length. To enrich the colour, small amounts of Syrah and Petite Sirah (2% and 6% respectively) are added. The wine is aged in small French oak barrels for 14 months. The wine has a dark purple-red colour. Intense aromatics of raspberry, blueberry and chocolate lead to flavours of crushed berries, vanilla, and leather, encased in a soft, smooth tannin structure. The finish shows a lovely finesse and balance. 2006 Diamond Collection Pinot Noir, Monterey County / Shelf Price $40.00 / Pre-arrival Price $32.00 "People are saying that 2006 could be the best Pinot Noir vintage in ten years, and I would have to agree." Corey Beck, winemaker. The wine has exceptionally dark colour, which is not typical of this varietal. It exhibits explosive aromatics Crushed raspberries, cranberries, and wild lavender) and impressive concentration, due in large part to the well-draining soils of the Monterey vineyards. Red, ripe cherries, cranberries, and an intriguing spice component on the palate. Tannins are supple, contributing to the wonderfully plush texture, and the finish on this wine is extremely lengthy. 2006 Diamond Collection Claret, California / Shelf Price $42.00 / Pre-arrival Price $33.60 “Our prize offering... a new, ultra premium, Francis Ford Coppola Black Label Claret. This label honors the first California Cabernet blended in a Bordeaux style, done by Gustave Niebaum in 1910. This newly designed label and package are designated “1910 type” after one of the classic California blends of 1910. This is truly timeless quality in a classic blend style, available at a price my friends can afford!” Francis Ford Coppola All five Bordeaux varieties are used in this blend (with Cabernet Sauvignon making up the bulk at 79%) from grapes sourced from Napa and Sonoma, as well as the warmer El Dorade region. The Merlot and Cabernet Franc grapes were sourced from Coppola's estate vines in Geyserville, Sonoma. The long growing season of 2006 made things easy (or easier!) for winemaker Corey Beck: "We didn’t start harvesting until after Labor Day, a winemaker’s dream." The Claret displays an inky dark magenta. The nose shows plum, blackberry, mocha and crème brulée. The palate is deep, rich, and firmly structured and offers succulent flavours of wild berries, cassis, and anise. A full-bodied and extremely rewarding wine. Director's Cut In honour of the new winery finished in 2006, this line of all-Sonoma wines were created. The wines represent winemaker Corey Beck's personal vision (with the analogy to the director's vision while filming) of making varietal wines which express true appellation character. The range, as seen by the design of the labels, also pays homage to the history of filmmaking in America. 2006 Director's Cut Chardonnay, Russian River Valley / Shelf Price $39.00 / Pre-arrival Price $31.20 The Russian River Valley climate is shaped by a regular intrusion of cooling fog from the Pacific Ocean a few miles to the west. This fog, which arrives in the evening and retreats the following morning, allows for a greater contrast in the day-night temperatures, and causes the grapes to ripen more slowly. This, together with a mixture of well-drained soils and low cropping levels, ensures grapes with intense flavour and complexity. Grapes are crushed whole-cluster and fermented entirely in French oak barrels to produce a wine with a seductive, round texture and notes of sweet vanilla. Profuse aromatics of honeysuckle, orange blossoms, and ripe pear are folded into classic Russian River flavours of green apple, tropical fruit and citrus.Not only does this technique create a lavish character, it works to highlight the green apple, honeysuckle, and citrus flavors, which are the hallmark of Russian River vineyards. 2006 Director's Cut Zinfandel, Dry Creek Valley / Shelf Price $42.00 / Pre-arrival Price $33.60 There are two methodologies for growing Zinfandel in Dry Creek Valley. Ons consists of traditional farming practices, which includes the dry-farming of head-trained, spur-pruned vines, that are quite mature and severly thinned in the spring to produce low yields. The other employs more modern methods, including bilateral cordon, spur-pruned on-wire trellising, drop irrigation, and carefully manicured canopies. The grapes for the Director's Cut are sourced from vineyards on the benchlands and hillsides, which are farmed both ways. 9% Petite Sirah is added for structure. The nose of this wine shows invigorating aromas of cherry, black currant and rum & raisin, which are followed by a rich and fleshy palate, brimming with flavours of sweet strawberry jam, briary blackberries, and toasted spices. 2006 Director's Cut Pinot Noir, Sonoma / Shelf Price $50.00 / Pre-arrival Price $40.00 The Sonoma Coast appellation encompasses the entire Sonoma County coastline, which extends form the Carneros appellation in the south to the Russian River Valley appellation in the northeast. The strong influence from the Pacific Ocean causes this appellation to remain relatively cool throughout the growing season, yet receive enough sunlight for the Pinot Noir grapes to reach optimum ripeness. The grapes are harvested early in the morning, and cold soaked prior to fermentation. The latter takes place in open top fermenters. This wine is extremely dark and dense, and offers tantalizing flavours of crushed cranberries, cherry, and strawberry as well as exotic notes of sandalwood and spice box. A silky texture, soft tannins and fine balance compliments the palate, and the finish lingers in the mouth. 2006 Director's Cut Cabernet Sauvignon,Alexander Valley / Shelf Price $53.00 / Pre-arrival Price$42.40 The grapes for the 100% Cabernet Sauvignon come from Sonoma's illustrious Alexander valley. This long, narrow valley boasts a great diversity of soils, as well as temperatures (the southern part is the first to receive the fog from the coast, and is therefore cooler than the north). All these factors contribute to the complexity of the flavours in the grapes, and these are directly reflected in the structure and essence of the wine. The Director's Cut Cabernet delivers enticing aromas of cola, cherry, and eucalyptus before revealing dark, rich berries, cassis and clack cherries, which is typical of fruit grown in the Alexander Valley. Well seasoned for 24 months in new (60%) and used (40%) French oak, the tannins have a velvet-like texture, and the wine as a whole displays magnificent structure and poise. Greenock Creek, Barossa Valley (Wines expected mid September) Greenock Creek is owned by Michael and Annabelle Waugh, and makes varietal wines from Granche, Shiraz and Cabernet grown in Seppeltsfield and Marananga, in the Barossa valley. Most will be familiar with Greenock Creek as they are well sought after wines, and regularly appear in the Langton's top 500 list. Unfortunately we can offer neither the Creek Block Shiraz, nor the Cornerstone Grenache, however, we have secured limited quantities of their other six wines. In the case of the Roenfeldt road wines the quantities are very limited i.e. 2 btls only. 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon / Shelf Price $50.00 / Offer Price $44.50 Made from 100% cabernet grown in the heavy red loam of Seppeltsfield in the heart of the Barossa. The average vine age is 10 years. This wine generally sees some older Frenck oak. 2006 Alice’s Shiraz / Shelf Price $40.00 / Offer Price $36.00 100% shiraz grown in sandy loam. The average vine age is 14 years. Generally spends 28 months in American oak. 2006 Apricot Block Shiraz / Shelf Price $46.00 / Offer Price $41.40 Made from 100% shiraz grown in soil which varies from red loam, to clay and granite. The average vine age is 16 years, and the wine generally spends about 28 months in American oak. 2006 Seven acre Shiraz / Shelf Price $58.00 / Offer Price $52.20 Made from 100% shiraz, grown in red loam aver a limestone and bluestone substrate. Average vine age 21 years. Generally aged in American oak for 28 months. 2003 Roenfeldt road Shiraz / Shelf Price $295.00 / Offer Price $265.50 100% Shiraz from Sandy loam and clay in the Marananga region of the Barossa Valley. Whereas the yields of the previous wines have been low, between 1 to 1.5 tonnes per acre, the Roenfeldt Road yields only one half of a tonne from its 60 year + vines. This amazingly concentrated fruit will relish its time in new American oak. 2003 Roenfeldt road Cabernet Sauvignon / Shelf Price $295.00 / Offer Price $265.50 100% Cabernet from sandy loam in the Marananga. Again these old vines and their equally low yields produce a very powerful wine. 36 months in older French Oak. Clos St Jean, Chateauneuf du Pape (Available now until sold out*) The Clos Saint Jean was founded in 1900 by Edmund Tacussel and wines have been bottled under the label since 1910. Brothers, Pascal and Vincent Maurel took over running the family property after their father, Guy, passed away in 1982. Aided by winemaker Phillippe Gambie, the trio have brought the domiane to prominence through attention to vineyard health low cropping yields, and - of course - hard work. Since 2003 the two standout cuvees, La Combe des Fous and Deus ex Machina have been winning international acclaim.*NB these two wines are also available in only very limited quantities. La Combe des Fous (Hill of fools) is named in honour of Edmund Tacussel, and the reaction to his decision to plant vines in a particular area - considered too hard to work due to the substrate of very large river rocks - of the famous parcel 'La Crau' (Vieux Telegraph et al). Tacussel's 'madness' is vindicated once we taste this 'massive but mineral and sweet perfumed' wine (Robert Parker). Parker 94-97, Tanzer 93-96 Deus ex Machina is a modest acknowledgement that the reversal of fortune of the domaine, realised after the release of these two superb cuvees, may be due to some God or other dangling from the proscenium arch, rather than the persistence of the heirs of Tacussel's determined foresight. Parker, 94-96+, Tanzer 94-97 2006 Clos St Jean Chateauneuf du Pape / Shelf Price $88.00 / Offer Price $79.00 “Inky ruby. Powerful dark berr y aromas , with gentle garrigue and anise building with air. Fresh, racy and focused, offering sweet raspberr y and blackberry flavors and suave, harmonious tannins. Turns spicier on the finish, with echoing red berry flavors.” Tanzer Robert Parker,91-93, Stephen Tanzer 90-93 2006 La Combe des Fous / Shelf Price $170.00 / Offer Price $153.00 "Saturated ruby. Super-ripe kirsch and cassis aromas are complicated by pungent garrigue and anise, with a subtle floral undercurrent building with air. Deep and sweet but not over the top, offering dense red and dark berry liqueur flavors, velvety tannins and superb finishing thrust. The blend this year is 50% grenache, 30% syrah and 20% vaccarese.” Tanzer 2006 Deus ex Machina / Shelf Price $170.00 / Offer Price $153.00 “Bright ruby. Pungent raspberry and garrigue aromas , with subtle rose, anise and vanilla bean qualities building in the glass. Beautifully balanced wine, playing fresh red berry flavors against meatier herbal and earthy qualities , with the fruit gaining the upper hand on the close. A huge palate-stainer, yet this possesses remarkable balance and finishing energ y, leaving a strong impression of floral pastille behind.” Tanzer Domaine de Beaurenard, Chateauneuf du Pape (Available now until sold out) In an effort to balance the New World with the Old, we are revisiting another Chateauneuf producer, that attentive readers may recognise. Domaine de Beaurenard has been a family-run estate for seven generations. A notarial act dated 16 December 1695 mentions “Bois Renard”, which over time has become “Beaurenard”. Today it is run by the brothers Frederic and Daniel Coulon who have taken over from Paul and Régine. The estate covers 32 hectares of vines in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and 25 hectares in the Côtes du Rhône Villages Rasteau AOC area. The vines are 45 years old on average, across the holdings and their yield in Châteauneuf is a low 25-35 hl/ha. ‘Domaine de Beaurenard is a consistent estate that has been making top-notch wines for as long as I have been writing about wine, which is now 28+ years. In fact, the 1929 tasted a year ago still had some life left in it. In any event, the Coulon family, who have been major estate bottlers not only in Chateauneuf du Pape but also in Rasteau, have an almost unmatched record of quality and were one of the first to begin making a more progressive style of Chateauneuf du Pape purer, cleaner, with more fruit, without sacrificing Provencal typicity.’ Robert Parker 2005 Beaurenard Chateauneuf du Pape / Shelf Price $89.00 / Offer Price $79.00 From 60-year-old vines. The blend usually contains 70 percent Grenache, 10 percent Mourvèdre, 10 percent Syrah and 10 percent other varieties. ‘2005 looks like a great vintage for the Coulons, with the 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape superb with notes of melted licorice, white chocolate, blackberry, and sweet cherry. There’s some smoke and Provencal herbs also mixed in the complex aromatics. In the mouth it is full-bodied, moderately tannic, with outstanding depth, richness, and purity. This wine will benefit from 1-2 years of bottle age and drink well for 15 or so years.’ 91-93 points Robert Parker 2005 Beaurenard Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Boisrenard / Shelf Price $152.00 / Offer Price $136.00 The standard blend is 80 percent Grenache and 20 percent the other varieties, from just 7 acres of very old vines planted between 1902 and 1935. Yields average only about 1 tonne per acre (18 hectoliters per hectare), and 20 percent of the wine is aged in new oak barrels and is bottled without fining or filtration. ‘The brilliant modern school of winemaking is well-represented by the inky purple-colored 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape Boisrenard. With well-integrated oak and pure creme de cassis notes intermixed with licorice, truffle, espresso roast, and chocolate, the wine is dense, pure, rich, complex, and capable of lasting two decades. It is another stunning wine and has the potential to be the best Boisrenard since the 2001 or 1998. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2025.’ 92-95 points Robert Parker ‘Saturated ruby. Deeply floral nose offers spicy strawberry and raspberry complicated by rose and lavender. Round and creamy in the mouth, displaying wonderfully fresh, sweet red berry flavors and silky tannins. The finish is impressively long and throws off an array of red fruit and exotic spice notes.’ 93-96 points Josh Raynolds, Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar order form |
